Mike Shum (born 1985) is an Asian-American documentary filmmaker and journalist whose work has focused on conflict reporting, investigative journalism, and long-form storytelling. He has collaborated with media organizations such as The New York Times, Time Magazine, and PBS Frontline. He is known for producing and directing Hondros (2017), Police on Trial (2022), and American Voices: A Nation in Turmoil (2020).

Early Life and Education

Shum was born in Aurora, Colorado, in 1985, to parents who immigrated from Hong Kong growing up in the Denver area. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Colorado College in 2007, graduating cum laude.

Career

Early in his career, Shum worked as a video news reporter and cinematographer for international outlets such as The New York Times, France 24, CNN, Time Magazine, and National Geographic. His work includes conflict reporting and investigative journalism, covering international events.

In 2017, he served as producer and director of photography for the feature documentary Hondros, which chronicled the life and legacy of war photographer Chris Hondros. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, and was later distributed by Netflix.

Shum has also worked on television broadcast documentaries with Al Jazeera's Witness Series and PBS Frontline. In 2020, he was the writer, producer, and director for American Voices: A Nation in Turmoil, a documentary examining political and social divisions in the U.S. during the 2020 presidential election.

In 2022, he directed Police on Trial, a PBS Frontline documentary investigating the city of Minneapolis in the two years following the murder of George Floyd. The film was awarded the Salute to Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists in the category of Television Top 15 Markets: Documentary. It was also nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary.

Nieman Fellowship at Harvard

In 2024, Shum was awarded a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University. He is listed as a fellow in the Nieman Foundation’s Class of 2025, where he continues to develop investigative documentary projects and explore the role of journalism in shaping public narratives.

Personal Life

Shum resides in his hometown of Denver, Colorado, with his wife, Mai Yer Vang. He continues to work on investigative and character-driven storytelling projects. Shum is a co-founder of Mountain Media Arts Collective, which provides training and community support for underrepresented media artists.
