Mary Ellen "May" Zambra was was one of 23 members of the Cumann na mBan who participated in the hunger strikes at Kilmainham Gaol during the Irish Civil War. She was born in September 1906.[1]

May Zambra was imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol after she shot a member of the Criminal Investigation Division.[2][3] during the Irish Civil War.

In February 1923, May joined 22 other members of Cumann na mBan as they went on hunger strike to protest the illegal arrests and imprisonments of republicans.[4] She became the youngest republican hunger striker at 17 years old.[5] Zambra died a few years after the hunger strike due to complications caused by her participation and the conditions of her imprisonment.[citation needed]
