Max Ostro (born on June 9, 2004[1]) is a Russian born musician known primarily as a virtuoso[2][3][4] guitar player.

Early life and influences

[edit]

Max Ostro was born on June 9, 2004 in Irkutsk, Russia. Even before picking up acoustic guitar at about the age of 10, Max was an avid listener of guitar oriented music, such as rock'n'roll, indie rock, and alternative rock, although at that time, guitar was not his focal point. After 3 years of basic strumming, Max discovered Buddy Guy and other blues musicians, and quickly switched to learning electric guitar instead.[5]

Max's playing style is heavily influenced by players like Nick Johnston, Frank Gambale, Paul Gilbert, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Andy Timmons, Robben Ford, Allan Holdsworth, and Greg Howe[6].

Career

[edit]

In September 2018, at the age of 14, Max Ostro was invited to perform at D'Addario Guitar Festival, and got endorsements with D'Addario[7] and Ibanez[8] shortly after.

In June 2020, his YouTube videos went viral[9]. He then was approached by JTC Guitar with a proposal to make educational content, which was then released on the platform[10].

Praise and accolades

[edit]

Max's style was described by Matteo Mancuso as “a killer mix of Bumblefoot, Guthrie Govan, and Tom Quayle.”[11][12] Ron Thal acknowledged Max as “the most promising [guitarist] of his generation.”[13] Music journalist Kaju Roberto refers to Max Ostro as “one of the best guitarists in the world.”[14]

Equipment and software

[edit]

Max Ostro is an official artist for Ibanez guitars[8], D'Addario strings[7], Xvive wireless transmitters[15], ADV.Sound headphones[16], and Swiss Picks[17]. Although not all of his guitars have a floating tremolo system, he endorses Vega-Trem[18] over Floyd Rose and other similar systems. He's also using a Positive Grid Spark as his practice amp at home. When recording, Max's go-to is Overloud TH-U amp simulation plugin, which contains his signature amps, pedals, and presets[19]
