Mateusz Atman (born 1985) – is a Polish multidisciplinary artist, theatre director, dramatist, screenwriter, set designer, and academic lecturer. He lives in Warsaw, Poland.[1]
Biography
[edit]Despite teaching at the Szczecin Art Academy, Atman did not graduate from an art school.[2] He is self-taught. Since 2015, he has been working in a creative duo with Agnieszka Jakimiak.[3]. One of his formative experiences was working with Oliver Frljić.
The play "The Curse" (2017), for which Atman served as assistant director, led to public protests and controversy.[4] Theatre critic Dariusz Kosiński, writing in Tygodnik Powszechny, described it as a "turning point in the history of contemporary Polish theater." In the same publication, Kosiński assessed Atman and Jakimiak's subsequent work, stating: "Today, after years of observing their collaborative work, I have the impression that they have drawn the most interesting and far-reaching conclusions from this experience."[5]
Work
[edit]Atman and Jakimiak explore the boundaries between truth and fiction, social and personal politics, freedom and censorship, play and violence, hierarchy and heterarchy. For Atman, the therapeutic potential of art is important.[6]
Atman's and Jakimiak's work has generated critical debate due to its exploration of taboo subjects and challenging aesthetic choices. Critics and scholars have noted their frequent incorporation of nudity and explicit examinations of bodily autonomy and sexuality in their productions. The 2022 performance "Nice Work," described by critics as post-pornographic and naturist in approach, included a controversial moment where audience members were offered breast milk as part of the performance's examination of bodily substances.[7][8]
Atman has created over 30 theatrical, performative, choreographic, concert, and film events. His acclaimed and original performances addressing important issues include the ecological "Nature morte" (2020), postcolonial, anarchistic "Peasantry" (2023), interspecies, posthumanist "Good Doggie" (2024), queer "Susan Sontag" (2024), and psychedelic "The Doors of Perception" (2025). Selected works have been presented at international festivals.[9]
