  • Comment: Even though this version is better than the last, there are barely any sources for his education and research. Moreover, many of the sources are primary and unreliable. 🍗TheNuggeteer🍗 (My "blotter") 05:46, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment: Can you please provide citations for some of the personal information in here? eg there is a birthdate, dates of graduations, etc asilvering (talk) 06:20, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment: He is notable, but this page has too many WP:MOS issues which the source editor needs to clean up:
    1. For books, parents, pubs use the {{cite}}, don't double enter them please. I edited one.
    2. This is not a CV. Please remove all funding info, that is routine for academics.
    3. Remove non-notable awards such as that for a student. IEEE Fellow is relevant, minor ones are not.
    4. Read WP:Peacock and remove any bragging -- just state the facts.
    5. Everything needs a source.
There hay be more, look at other pages. Ldm1954 (talk) 17:02, 9 April 2025 (UTC)

Marios M. Polycarpou (Greek: Μάριος Μ. Πολυκάρπου; born August 27, 1962 [1]) is a Cypriot electrical engineer, academic and researcher, a pioneer in Artificial Intelligence. In 2023, he was awarded the prestigious IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award,[2][3] for his "Contributions to the theory and application of neural networks and learning systems in monitoring and control".

He is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering[4][5] at the University of Cyprus, a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London[6] and Chair of the Advisory Board of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence[7] at the University of Cyprus.[8] He is also a Founding Member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts [1] and a Member of Academia Europaea[9] (The Academy of Europe).

Education

[edit]

Polycarpou was born in Kaimakli, Nicosia, Cyprus. He studied at Rice University and received the BA Degree in Computer Science and the BSc Degree in Electrical Engineering, both in 1987. Then, he received the M.S. and PhD Degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, in 1989 and 1992 respectively.

Career

[edit]

Polycarpou joined the University of Cincinnati in 1992, initially as an Assistant Professor, and eventually became full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science. In 2001, he relocated from USA to Europe to become the first faculty to join the newly established Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department [4] at the University of Cyprus (the first ECE department in the country), where he served as founding Dept. Chair between July 2001 and February 2008. In 2008, together with other colleagues, he founded the KIOS Research Center [7] for Intelligent Systems and Networks at the University of Cyprus, which in 2017 was upgraded to a European Center of Excellence.[10] Polycarpou served as the Director of the Center from March 2008 until June of 2024.

Between 2004-2010 he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems,[11] between 2012-2013 as the President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society,[12] and between 2017-2019 as the President of the European Control Association.[13]

Research

[edit]

Polycarpou's research work is focused on intelligent systems and control, adaptive and learning systems, fault diagnosis, artificial intelligence and neural networks, and critical infrastructure systems, such as water distribution networks, power and transportation systems, smart buildings, etc.

His work on neural networks-based adaptive control methods has opened new ways for designing neural control schemes with learning capabilities for uncertain dynamical systems. In 1994, he developed an entirely new approach to using a learning systems methodology in fault diagnosis. His approach is now being used in large-scale cyber-physical systems, where faults can significantly affect their operation and performance.

Polycarpou has authored more than 400 journal articles and conference proceedings and co-authored 7 books. He is also the holder of 6 patents.
