Mandahla Rose is an Australian actress known for portraying lesbian characters in Australian and US films and web series.[1] Her breakthrough role was in the 2015 Australian indie film All About E (directed by Louise Wadley), where she played the title character E.[2]
Early life
[edit]Rose lived in foster care from the age of six. When she was eight she was placed with two nuns, from the Dominican Order. She lived with them until the age of 19.[3][4]
Career
[edit]Parts in commercials and music videos led to small parts in films and eventually to Rose landing the lead role in the 2015 independent film All About E,[5] where she played E, a lesbian DJ who has to flee Sydney with best friend Matt after she comes into possession of a bag of cash and is hotly pursued by gangsters who want it back. While on the run, E is forced to ask an old flame for shelter.[6]
The success of that film helped Rose make connections in Los Angeles,[7] where she relocated to in 2016.[4] Once in California, she picked up more work, including lead roles in the made-for-television film For the Love of Jessee – a rare hetrosexual character in her resumé[8] – and the indie film Forever Not Maybe.[9] But where she is most often seen is playing lesbian characters in short films and web series, of which she has appeared in more than 15 of the former and 10 of the latter to date, including Emmy Award-winning Venice: the Series.[10]
In 2024 she starred in a short called The Paradise Road, for which she was awarded Best Actress at The Hollywood International Diversity Film Festival.[11]
February 2025 saw Rose reprise the character of Zoë in Season 7 of Venice: the Series, after the web series had a five year hiatus. Venice: the Series was created by actress and producer Crystal Chappell (Days of Our Lives, One Life to Live, Guiding Light), who also plays the lead role of Gina, a successful lesbian designer who spends the first few seasons trying to win back former girlfriend Ani (Jessica Leccia – Guiding Light, One Life to Live, Rescue Me). Zoë is the ex-girlfriend of Gina's daughter Sarah (Elizabeth Scott – Days of our Lives). Venice has earned attention for its alternative business model – the web soap streams to subscribers on Vimeo, as well as being available on DVD.[10]
Rose also has credits for work behind the camera, usually as a production assistant or 1st assistant camera, but also as assistant director and other technical roles.[12]
She also creates, and sells, art in various forms.[4]
Personal life
