Maki Fine Arts is a contemporary art gallery located in Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 2010 by Takahiro Maki, the gallery specializes in showcasing works by both emerging and established contemporary artists from Japan and abroad.[1] The gallery has gained recognition for representing artists who have achieved major institutional recognition, including Yasuko Toyoshima, who had a major retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2023-2024.[2] It is distinct from MAKI Gallery, which was originally named SAKURADO FINE ARTS until its rebranding in 2020.[3]
History
[edit]Maki Fine Arts was established in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo in 2010 with a focus on promoting new and mid-career Japanese artists to a global audience.[4] In 2015, the gallery relocated to its current location in Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku, in a refurbished space previously used as an auto mechanics shop.[4] The unique space, renovated from a former printing factory, has been noted for its distinctive atmosphere and has been described as leaving "a lasting impression" on visitors.[1]
Exhibitions and Artists
[edit]The gallery represents artists at various stages of their careers, including veteran artists who hold prominent positions in Japan's contemporary art history, such as Yoshio Shirakawa (b. 1948), mid-career artists who have received solid recognition, such as Yasuko Toyoshima (b. 1967) and Fuminao Suenaga (b. 1974), and representatives of new generations of artists.[5] The gallery is known for its emphasis on artist-curated exhibitions and critical contributions from curators and critics. Notable exhibitions have included Beyond the Future of Meld Sculpture (2018) curated by Yoshio Shirakawa and Discreet Abstraction (2015) curated by Fuminao Suenaga.[1]
Major Artist Recognition
[edit]The gallery's significance in Japan's contemporary art scene has been highlighted through the institutional recognition of its represented artists. In 2023-2024, Yasuko Toyoshima, one of the gallery's key artists, received a major retrospective titled "Origination Method" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, marking "the first-ever museum exhibition" of her 30-year career.[2][6] The exhibition, featuring nearly 400 works, was extensively covered in international art publications and demonstrated the caliber of artists represented by the gallery.[7]
International Activities
[edit]Maki Fine Arts has also proactively introduced international artists to its Japanese audience. In 2019, the gallery presented American artist Alex Dodge's first solo show in Asia. The gallery has participated in international art fairs, including NADA New York 2016, where it was noted as one of the galleries "traveling the farthest" from Tokyo and its showcased works were mentioned in art publications such as Artnet News.[8][4]
Location and Operations
[edit]Maki Fine Arts is located at B1F, 77-5 Tenjin-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, approximately 4 minutes from Tokyo Metro Tozai Line's Kagurazaka station (Exit 2).[9] The gallery operates Wednesday to Saturday from 12:00 to 19:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00, with closures on Monday and Tuesday.[10]
Distinction from MAKI Gallery
[edit]Maki Fine Arts should not be confused with MAKI Gallery, which operates separate locations in Omotesando and Tennoz, Tokyo. MAKI Gallery, originally established as SAKURADO FINE ARTS in 2003, rebranded to its current name in 2020 and focuses on a broader range of avant-garde and contemporary artists.[11][12]
