Lucas Figueroa is an Argentine-Spanish film and television director, producer, and screenwriter.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Lucas Figueroa was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The son of Spanish immigrants, he studied music and economics in Buenos Aires before graduating in Image and Sound Design from the University of Buenos Aires. He began his career as a multimedia editor for the Telefónica Group. During his early years in the audiovisual industry, he worked as an editor and filmmaker for companies such as Disney and Universal Studios. After completing his university studies, he continued his education in the United States and Europe.
Film Career
[edit]After settling in Europe, Figueroa built an extensive career as a director in advertising and film, gaining recognition for his black comedy short film trilogy. His short film Because There Are Things You Never Forget earned the Guinness World Record for the most-awarded short film in history, with over 500 international accolades.
In 2012, he directed his first feature film, Viral, considered the first European feature entirely financed by brands and later selected as a case study in film schools. He then released Dismissal (2017), a black comedy starring Imanol Arias and Hugo Silva, which became one of the first Spanish productions featured on Netflix.[1]
In 2020, he directed the documentary project Renaceres (Renaissance in 8K), regarded as Spain's historical archive of the pandemic, entirely shot in 8K. Its sequel, Despertares (Awakenings), juxtaposed images of empty spaces during lockdown with their post-pandemic state, portraying society as a living organism.
In 2022, HBO Max premiered his series Osel, a five-year, four-continent production about Osel Hita Torres, a Spanish boy recognized as the reincarnation of a prominent Buddhist lama.
Additionally, Figueroa directs and produces El Fin del Dinero (The End of Money), a documentary on the evolution of the global monetary system.
In 2024, he released I Am Not Your Lama and El mejor infarto de mi vida (The Best Heart Attack of My Life), a Disney+ series based on the real-life story of writer Hernán Casciari.
Production Companies and Collaborations
[edit]Figueroa founded the production and distribution companies Mr. Monkey and New Frequency, collaborating with platforms such as Amazon, Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Movistar+, and Viacom.
