Loukas Kastrounis - Overview
[edit]Loukas Kastrounis (Λουκάς Καστρουνής) is a Greek Martial Arts instructor and author born on 8th July 1957. Loukas Kastrounis is a Wing Chun Kune Kung Fu and Kali Eskrima / Jeet Kune Do martial artist and is a third-generation direct descendant after Yip Man (Ip Man)[2] through Bruce Lee’s teacher Wong Shun Leung and second-generation Kali Eskrima / Jeet Kune Do instructor through Dan Inosanto. Loukas Kastrounis has been teaching martial arts since 1992. His students have included law enforcement officers, security firms and special agents in the UK and the Greek army (including the military reserves). His book, ‘Wing Chun in Depth – Skills for Combat, Strategies for Life[3]’, was released in 2023 by YMAA publishing house. Loukas Kastrounis’ Headquarters, Reading Academy Wing Chun and Kali Eskrima Arnis / JKD[4] in Reading, Berkshire, UK, was established in 1992 along with other schools in Europe and Crete Island, Greece [5]. Loukas Kastrounis also trained in boxing prior to his Wing Chun and Kali Eskrima Arnis / JKD training and is a senior coach Kung Fu - Kick Boxing Martial Arts with BIKMA (British International Kickboxing and Martial Arts Association).
Early Life and Background
[edit]Loukas Kastrounis (Λουκάς Καστρουνής) was born and grew up in Athens, Greece. He studied the piano at the National Conservatory of Athens in his youth, as well as pursuing other activities, including judo, boxing and football.[6]. He first learnt boxing in a gym in Peristeri, Athens. During 1974 - 1976, he studied Hospitality and Tourist Management in Rhodes, Greece. Kastrounis was conscripted to the Greek Army in November 1976 - June 1979 where he served in the Greek Army as a NATO driver and as a personal driver to a Greek Colonel.[6]
In 1982, Kastrounis moved to England and met Nino Bernardo Sifu, who was the United Kingdom authorised representative of Sifu Wong Shun Leung at ‘The Basement’ Wing Chun training school in Stoke Newington, Hackney, London. Kastrounis began his Wing Chun training in 1982 with over two years of private one-to-one tuition under Nino Bernardo, after which he continued both his ongoing group training and regular one-to-one sessions. In 1986, he was introduced to Kali Eskrima training, upon Dan Inosanto's visit to 'The Basement' in London[7].
Loukas Kastrounis received his signed letter from his teacher for the completion of the Wing Chun system[2] in 2000. In 1992, Kastrounis opened his first training school, ‘The Garage’ in Lower Early, Reading, under the authorisatinion of Sifu Nino Bernardo. Loukas Kastrounis became Nino Bernardo's main representative in the UK and Europe (1997 - 2008). In 1995, Kastrounis moved to a larger premises in Reading, Berkshire and renamed his main school "Reading Academy Wing Chun and Kali Eskrima".

[edit]Loukas Kastrounis was awarded the Kung Fu Hall of Fame Achievers Award by Combat Magazine in 2003[13][7].
In 2013, Kastrounis appeared on a BBC 2 TV documentary covering Wing Chun and Reading Academy. In 2014, Kastrounis also appeared on BBC Radio Berkshire, giving an interview about Wing Chun and Kali Eskrima. In 2014, Kastrounis appeared on the Greek national TV channel 'KOSMOS TV' in another documentary covering his approach to Wing Chun and Kali Eskrima.
In 2023, Kastrounis released his book through YMAA publication house 'Wing Chun in Depth: Skills for Combat, Strategies for Life'[3] In 2024, Kastrounis was invited to return to BBC Radio Berkshire to give a second interview, this time about his lifetime achievements and contributions to Martial Arts. In 2025, Kastrounis was interviewed by 'Masters Magazine' where he appeared in a multi-page article covering his approach to Wing Chun, Kali Eskrima / JKD. [19][20]
