From 1950 to 1999, 48 tropical cyclones have affected the U.S. state of Louisiana.
1950–1959
[edit]July 29, 1954 – Tropical Storm Barbara made landfall in Vermilion Bay, with the highest wind gust reported offshore was 60 mph (97 km/h) by the Henry M. Dawes. Some damage to crops was reported from the heavy rains.[1]
August 1, 1955 – Tropical Storm Brenda made landfall east of New Orleans, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (105 km/h), with 4 in (10 cm) of rain falling westward to Lake Charles, with 50 mph (80 km/h) winds in Shell Beach.[2][3]
August 27, 1955 – An unnamed tropical storm passed between New Orleans Airport and the Naval Air Station at 0600 UTC, with the highest winds at 40–50 mph (64–80 km/h).[4]
June 13, 1956 – A tropical storm made landfall west of Grand Isle, with the highest wind report being at 55 mph (89 km/h) from the east at Grand Isle, with the highest rainfall amount at 6.13 in (15.6 cm) in Grand Isle. A person drowned when his truck skidded over the bridge to Lake Ponchartrain.[5]
June 27, 1957 – Hurricane Audrey made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane, with winds of 125 mph (201 km/h), with an atmospheric pressure of 946 mbar (27.9 inHg) between the mouth of the Sabine River and Cameron. An estimated $150 million in property damage was observed, with 60 to 80 percent of the houses being destroyed in a stretch from Cameron to Grand Chenier.[6]
September 5, 1958 – Hurricane Ella produced a wind gust of 75 mph (121 km/h) in Grand Isle.[7]
May 30, 1959 – Tropical Storm Arlene made landfall near Lafayette, producing 55 mph (89 km/h) on the coast. The lowest pressure recorded was 997 mbar (29.4 inHg) in Patterson. 11.35 in (28.8 cm) of rain was recorded in Houma, while 11.09 in (28.2 cm) fell in Moisant International Airport.[8]
1960–1969
[edit]September 15, 1960 – Hurricane Ethel produced winds of 90 mph (140 km/h), with gusts up to 103 mph (170 km/h) in Venice. In Burrwood, winds of 50 mph (80 km/h) was recorded. On Quarantine Bay, a tide of 7 ft (2.1 m) above mean sea level was reported.[9]
