On December 18 2003 Líneas Aéreas Suramericanas Flight 4246, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-15F operating a non-scheduled cargo flight from Bogotá to Mitú, Colombia, with a stopover in El Alcaraván Airport, crashed in the colombian Amazon after a structural failure. All three crew members on board were killed. The wreckage of flight 4246 was found ten days after the crash.[1]

Background

[edit]

Aircraft

[edit]

The aircraft involved was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-15F, built in 1967, registered as HK-4246X, and delivered to Líneas Aéreas Suramericanas in 2002.[2]

Crew and cargo

[edit]

The pilot was 50 years old Armando Enrique, which had 13768 flight hours of which 8054 on the McDonnell Douglas DC-9. The first officer was 25 years old Andres Eduardo, which had 2300 flight hours of which 601 on the McDonnell Douglas DC-9. There was also a third person onboard. The aircraft was transporting 9390 kg of various cargo.[3]

Accident

[edit]

The first leg of the flight, from El Dorado International Airport to El Alcaraván Airport went uneventful. At 4:30 pm local time flight 4246 took off from El Alcaraván Airport, after a refueling stopover, and headed towards Mitú. At 5:08 pm the last radio contact with the aircraft happened when the crew contacted the air traffic controller of the Mitú informing them that they were descending trought 25000 feet. About a minute later, when the aircraft was at an altitude of 23300 feet, the crew heard a loud noise, then they lost control of the aircraft which started descending and crashed about 135 km north-east of Mitú.[3][4] Due to the deep jungle and the presence of armed groups affiliated with drug cartels in the area, the aircraft wreckage was found only ten days after the crash.

Investigation

[edit]

The analysis of both flight recorders, the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, suggest that some sort of technical malfunction occurred in mid-flight, which led to a sudden loss of control from which the pilots could not recover. The final report stated that the detachment of a structural part of the aircraft in mid-flight for unknown reasons was the cause of the loss of control and subsequent crash of flight 4246.
