Kissproof World is the fourth solo album by American singer and songwriter Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go's. Wiedlin self-released the album in 2000 on her Painful Discs label. The album was produced by Wiedlin and Tim Anctil.
Background
[edit]During the 1990s, particularly after the release of her third solo album, Tangled, Wiedlin had grown bitter toward the record industry.[1] By the time she began work on Kissproof World, she had become confident enough to produce the album herself with her manager, Tim Anctil.[2] Wiedlin and Anctil also established Painful Discs to release the album independently, taking advantage of the Internet to reach listeners.[3]
Songs
[edit]When writing, Wiedlin typically concentrates on lyrics and melody first,[4] [5] and she has described the lyrics on Kissproof World as being “so revealing” of what she was experiencing in her life at that time.[6]
Several of the album’s tracks including “Feeling Like Flying”, “Fallen”, and “Sooner or Later” were written at Miles Copeland's Chateau Marouatte in France during a songwriting retreat.[7] [8] Wiedlin has described “Feeling Like Flying” as one of her favorite songs on the album; noting that it “was written in less than an hour” at the retreat.[9] “Fallen” was co-written at the retreat by Wiedlin, Trey Bruce, and Jim Vallance.[10]
The song “Icicle” started as a demo made by Wiedlin with fellow Go-Go, Charlotte Caffey.[11] According to Wiedlin, “Charlotte and I were so adamant that the Go-Go’s should do it, and they just kept saying, ‘it’s not really for us’”.[12]
Cover Artwork
[edit]American model, Dita Von Teese, is featured in photos in the CD booklet.[13] Von Teese is credited as “Jane’s plaything”.[14]
Critical Reception
[edit]A contemporaneous review in Rolling Stone magazine stated that “Kissproof World is a solo tour de force from an entrepreneur, actress and rock goddess hellbent on smashing her cutie-pie image”.[15]
