Kershal

[edit]

Kershal (Russian: Кершаль) is a small rural settlement located in the Sverdlovsk Oblast of Russia. It is part of the Pelym Urban, situated in a forested area near the Reka Kershal, from which it takes its name.

Geography

[edit]

Kershal lies in the northern part of Sverdlovsk Oblast, approximately 13 kilometers southwest of Pelym, the administrative center of the district. The village is located on the left bank of the Reka Kershal, a right tributary of the Pelym River.

The area is characterized by dense boreal forests (taiga) and a harsh continental climate. Just north of the settlement runs the Urengoy–Center gas pipeline, a key piece of Russia's energy infrastructure.

A small railway station, Kershal Station, serves the village along the Ivdel–Priobye branch of the Sverdlovsk Railway, connecting it to regional transport networks.

History

[edit]

The exact date of Kershal’s founding is unclear, but it was likely established during the Soviet era as part of development efforts in the northern Ural region. The presence of railway infrastructure and proximity to energy pipelines suggests that it may have had a logistical or industrial role, possibly tied to forestry or gas transport.

Population

[edit]

As of the 2010 Russian Census, Kershal had a population of 1 person. Earlier estimates from 2002 reported 3 residents, and the number remained stable as of 2020. Despite its near-abandonment, the village still appears on official maps and maintains a recognized administrative status.

Administrative Status

[edit]

Kershal is part of the Pelym Urban Okrug, which in turn falls under the jurisdiction of Ivdel, a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast. It is classified as a rural locality (settlement) within the Russian administrative hierarchy.

Trivia

[edit]

The settlement is occasionally confused online with other similarly named locations or even with individuals, due to the similarity in spelling. The Kershal River and the railway station remain the primary geographical features linking the settlement to broader regional infrastructure.
