Draft:KarDes Multicultural Memory Tour Guide

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KarDes is a mobile app designed as a personal tour guide for users wishing to discover the Turkey's multicultural legacy and multilayered fabric. The application is available in Turkish and English.

Memory Tours

[edit]

The app uses memory tours to make unfamiliar places in familiar neighborhoods visible.[1][2] Users can access the alternative historical narratives of cities with more than 40 memory tours featuring neighborhoods and specific themes, such as Water Heritage of Istanbul. Presently, the application's coverage includes Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Diyarbakır. Memory tours are prepared through detailed research, the narration of these tours is facilitated by volunteers, including actors and musicians.[1]

Oral history interviews and narrations

[edit]

KarDes also provides a forum for the documentating of neighborhood histories through oral history interviews with people who have lived or are currently living in these neighborhoods. Currently the application includes more than 70 oral history interviews.[1]

The App

[edit]

KarDes Multicultural Memory Tour Guide has been developed by the Hrant Dink Foundation with the support of Brandwolf Agency, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and Norway Embassy in Ankara.[3]

The application is a follow-up to the previous project, the Turkey Cultural Heritage Map. Launched in 2015, the project aimed to collect data on monasteries, churches, synagogues, and other buildings belonging to minorities in present-day Turkey.[4] Relevant sites then form a part of the digital map, available in both Turkish and English.[5][6]

The KarDes application, which supplements the Turkez Cultural Heritage Map, was launched in 2020. Within the first year of its existence, it was downloaded more than 20.000 times.[7] After its launching, it competed in the Golden Spider Award and received third place in the Mobile Applications – Service category.[8]

Workshops and Other Events

[edit]

During its five years of existence of the app, the Hrant Dink Foundation has organized various events related to the application, such as workshops and talks. [9][10][11] Additionally, launching events for individual tours were held.
