  • Comment: Fails WP:POLITICIAN. Wikipedia does not support the posting of candidate profiles for aspiring politicians. If she is elected Mayor than this position maybe reconsidered. Dan arndt (talk) 09:25, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

Joyce Watterman is an American politician and public servant who currently serves as the President of the Jersey City Council. She is the first African American woman to hold this position in the city's history.[1] In June 2024, she announced her candidacy for Mayor of Jersey City in the 2025 municipal election.[2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Watterman was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her mother, a former sharecropper, migrated from the southern United States in search of better opportunities.[3] Watterman grew up in public housing and attended the Jersey City public school system. She became the first in her family to graduate from high school, earn a college degree, and later obtain a master’s degree.[4]

Career and public service

[edit]

Before her political career, Watterman worked at the former Family Health Center in Jersey City. She also served as a pastor and volunteered as a chaplain in New Jersey state prisons, providing faith-based support to incarcerated individuals.[3]

Political career

[edit]

Watterman was elected as Councilwoman-At-Large in 2013, running on a reform slate alongside then-Councilman Steven Fulop.[5] In the 2021 election, she received the highest number of votes citywide.[6] In January 2020, Watterman was unanimously elected as Council President by her peers, becoming the first African American woman to serve in that role.[1]

Throughout her tenure, Watterman has prioritized affordable housing development, job training initiatives, youth programming, early childhood literacy, and infrastructure improvement.[7]

2025 mayoral campaign

[edit]

Watterman officially launched her campaign for Mayor of Jersey City in June 2024.[2] Her platform includes expanding affordable housing, improving education access, increasing public safety, and promoting economic development through local jobs and apprenticeship programs.[7] On April 3, 2025, she became the first declared candidate to submit nomination petitions to the City Clerk’s Office, demonstrating early grassroots support.[8] If elected, she would be the first woman to serve as mayor of Jersey City.[4]

Personal life

[edit]

Watterman is married and has children and grandchildren. She resides in Jersey City and is known for her faith-driven approach to public service and advocacy for working-class communities.[3]
