John "Jonesy" Jones[a] is a fictional character in the video game Fortnite by Epic Games, and later became one the main protagonists of Battle Royale's storyline. He also had a smaller role as a playable "hero" under the soldier class in Save the World.
Concept and creation
[edit]Early 3D concept renders for Jones showed him with a blonde militaresque crew/buzz cut hairstyle.[1]
Troy Baker provides the voice of the character in Battle Royale,[2] with his voice lines debuting during the Device event from Chapter 2: Season 2.
In popular culture
[edit]Jones was portrayed by Pete Davidson in a Fortnite-themed sketch on Saturday Night Live (SNL),[3] and would later make a brief cameo appearance in a 2019 episode of the Netflix animated series, Carmen Sandiego,[4] as well as being mentioned, alongside the location, Salty Springs, in the lyrics to Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign's upcoming song, Unlock.[5]
Reception
[edit]The character has generally been positively received by fans. Due to him serving as an iconic character who is central to the game's storyline, he has been often jokingly dubbed as "the guy from Fortnite" in a degrading manner, with its widespread usage making it a popular internet meme. As a result, the official Fortnite account would later acknowledge the nickname in a post published onto X in 2023.[6]
Notes
[edit]- ^ Currently using the alias Vengeance Jones, or simply Jones. Former aliases included Agent Jones, Captain Jones, and colloquially his nickname, Jonesy.
