Christopher John McDermott (born November 24, 1964)[citation needed] is a British-New Zealand economist, executive director of Motu Economic and Public Policy Research, and former assistant governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.[1] He graduated from Yale University in 1994 with a PhD in economics.[2]

International Monetary Fund

From October 1994 to October 1998, John McDermott worked with International Monetary Fund (IMF) as a part of the Asia and Pacific Department, helping with the 1997 Asian financial crisis.[3] He also wrote publications for them from 1995 to 2001.[4]

Victoria University

Since 2006, John McDermott has occasionally been a professor at Victoria University of Wellington.[3] From 2020 to 2021, John McDermott taught the paper ECON403, and ECON202 in 2020.[5][6][7]

Reserve Bank of New Zealand

In 2007, John McDermott joined the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as chief economist and became assistant governor in 2008.[8] In 2018, he announced he would be leaving the Reserve Bank in 2019. This announcement was made a month after Adrian Orr, then Governor of the Reserve Bank, planned on changing the senior leadership team.[9]

Since early March 2019, John McDermott has been executive director of Motu.[10]

From 2006 to 2012, John McDermott operated Margai Consultants Limited with Jane Gibney.[11][12]

Awards

On September 3, 2019, John McDermott was awarded the NZIER Economics Award in Wellington by professor Les Oxley and Dr Dianne McCarthy.[13][14]
