John Arthur Manning (September 23, 1917 – September 4, 1995) was a Canadian broadcaster and entrepreneur, known for his contributions to radio broadcasting in Nova Scotia. He founded multiple radio stations, including CKCL in Truro, CKDH in Amherst, and CKTO-FM, introducing stereo FM to the region.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Manning was born in Falmouth, Hants County, Nova Scotia, the son of Frederick Hamilton Manning and Vivian Gertrude Phinney. He developed an interest in radio at an early age and pursued a career in broadcasting.[1]
Career in Broadcasting
[edit]Manning began his career in 1938 at CHNS Halifax. After serving as a radar officer in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserves during World War II, he founded CKCL Truro on September 10, 1947.[2]
Over the years, he expanded his impact on the industry by launching additional stations:
1957 – Founded CKDH Amherst[3] 1965 – Introduced stereo FM broadcasting to Truro with CKTO-FM[4] Manning played a pivotal role in shaping the radio industry in Nova Scotia, fostering local talent and expanding access to news and entertainment.[4]
Personal Life
[edit]On August 7, 1944, Manning married Bethia Elizabeth Adrienne Shields in Bedford, Nova Scotia. They had three children:
- John Arthur Frederick Manning (b. 1947)
- Gwendolyn Anne Manning (b. 1949)
- Frederick Samuel "Ted" Manning (1955–2017)[5]
Death and Legacy
[edit]Manning died on September 4, 1995, in Truro, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, due to prostate cancer metastasis.[6] He was buried in Watson Cemetery, Salmon River.
Manning's contributions to the broadcasting industry in Atlantic Canada remain significant, with his radio stations continuing to serve their communities.[2]
