Jason F. Brown is an American film and television producer known for his creative leadership and ability to launch major franchises. He was instrumental in developing, packaging, and Executive Producing The Expanse, which NPR hailed as "the best sci-fi series of the decade,"[1] and it consistently earned high praise from critics; producing Guillermo del Toro's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which grossed over $100M theatrically and was praised for capturing the nostalgia of the source material[2]; and most recently executive producing Netflix's acclaimed adaptation of The Witcher, which set records as Netflix's most-watched series debut, reaching over 76 million households in its first month[3] and launched a major franchise for the streamer.
Brown's work consistently blends strong storytelling with commercial success. He currently serves as President of Los Angeles-based production company Hivemind.
Early Life and Education
Born to nomadic parents and raised in Europe, the United States, and Asia, Brown's multicultural upbringing deeply influenced his sensibilities, leading him to focus on stories that resonate globally. His early passion for books, comics, animation, and video games was a driving force throughout his life. Brown pursued his passion academically, studying Film and Television at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
Career
Early Career
Jason Brown began his career as a video game journalist writing for GameSpot[4] and Computer Gaming World[5] magazine as both a gaming critic and commentator, as well as film reviewer for news outlets. Brown transitioned to the film industry working under Scott Rudin, Dan Jinks, and Bruce Cohen, and eventually his mentor and producing partner, Sean Daniel. Brown's mission centers around uniting artists and creators across mediums.
He began producing as Sean Daniel's assistant on The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) and The Wolfman (2010), quickly rising as a key creative force. He led development efforts, expanded the company's slate, and drove its entry into television, most notably by launching and executive producing The Expanse. His impact earned him a promotion to Head of Development and, ultimately, partner in the company.
SDC (The Sean Daniel Company) was known for producing films like The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), Ben-Hur (2016), Everybody Wants Some!! (2016), and The Mummy (2017), and for originally developing The Expanse.
Notable projects Brown developed at SDC include:
- Agent 13 with Charlize Theron (Universal Pictures)[6]
- Dead Island, based on the video game (Lionsgate)[7]
- Archer & Armstrong, based on the Valiant comics title[8]
When Hivemind was founded in 2018, SDC's slate was integrated into the new company, where Brown continued as President.
Founding Hivemind
In 2018, Brown co-founded Hivemind with Sean Daniel and Kathy Lingg (formerly of Bad Robot). Hivemind launched with a first-look deal at Amazon Studios, followed by a two-year first look at Netflix prior to the 2023 WGA strike. Brown has served as President since day one and has led the company through several high-profile projects.
He produced Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, executive produced The Expanse, and oversaw Netflix's The Witcher franchise including its spinoffs and animated features.
