Jared Jekyll is an Australian writer, rapper, performance poet, comedian, and actor known for their work across spoken word, hip hop theatre, and experimental performance. They have performed at major festivals including the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Sydney Writers' Festival, and the National Young Writers' Festival. Jekyll is recognised for their high-energy style, blending poetic storytelling, music, and dark comedy to explore themes of mental health, identity, and queerness.

Early life and education

Jekyll was born and raised in Sydney, New South Wales, and attended Moriah College, an independent Modern Orthodox Jewish school in the city's eastern suburbs.[1]

Career

Jekyll began performing in Sydney’s poetry and music scenes, gaining recognition through slam competitions and youth arts festivals. Their early work addressed topics such as mental illness, gender identity, and Jewish heritage.

In 2014, Jekyll was a finalist at Tropfest, Australia's largest short film festival, with the film Free Hugs.[2]

They later debuted a solo theatre piece titled A Rabbi, a Rapper, and a Raging Homosexual at the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Jekyll has been commissioned by national organisations including ABC, Triple J, and Sydney Festival. Their poetry and performances have featured on national radio and at LGBTQ+ arts events.

Personal life

Jekyll identifies as non-binary and queer, and uses they/them pronouns.[3] They are an advocate for mental health awareness and gender inclusivity in the arts.
