JPedal Java PDF library

[edit]

JPedal is a long established Java-based PDF library and software development kit (SDK) developed by IDRsolutions.[1], a UK-based software company specializing in developer tools for PDF, HTML5, and image processing solutions.

Overview

[edit]

The Java library is designed to enable developers to view, print, convert, search, extract, and manipulate PDF files within Java applications[2].

It is widely used by enterprise clients globally[3] for its robust PDF handling capabilities, including support for XFA forms, resaving PDFs with modified form data, and rendering PDFs as images. JPedal is known for its configurability, extensive documentation, and strong support for demanding PDF use cases.

History

[edit]

JPedal was first developed in 2001 by Mark Stephens[4] as a side-project while he was working on publishing systems at News UK[5] to fill the obvious gap in the availability of PDF software on the Java platform. Following its success there, he founded IDRsolutions to develop and support the software.

As of 2025, software is still in very active development[6], used by over 200 organisations globally, and has led to several other products, including a Java Image library. JPedal is one of the few third-party PDF libraries to be licenced by Adobe Inc (the creators of the PDF specification) who use it to provide PDF support in Cold Fusion.

IDRsolutions has maintained a small, bootstrapped company model, with in-house support and frequent releases. The company remains owned by its founders and is based in Kings Hill, Kent, UK[7].

IDRsolutions has been a member of the PDF Association since February 2014[8]
