Ivan Sedliský[1] , born Ivan Kopřiva (May 14, 1926, Ostrava, CzechoslovakiaMarch 19 1999, Prague, Czech Republic)), was a Czech painter and graphic artist best known for his series of paintings depicting world-renowned painters and other notable figures

Biography

[edit]

The painter also used the name Ivo Sedliský. His brother was the Czech graphic artist and typographer Milan Kopřiva. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Vratislav Nechleba, with whom he worked as an assistant from 1952 to 1960. He primarily focused on figurative compositions and was the author of many monumental works. He is best known for his series of large-scale paintings featuring themes of world-famous painters, actors, and politicians, as well as portraits of women. His paintings of race car drivers are also well known. In the 1960s and 1970s, in addition to exhibiting in the Czech Republic, he also held exhibitions in other European countries, such as Germany and the Netherlands. Besides oil paintings, his mosaics can also be seen in public spaces—for example, at the Luhačovice Spa.

His paintings are represented in galleries and private collections across Europe and North America. Since 2000, his works have appeared in commercial galleries and auction houses. In 2012, an exhibition was held at Letovice Castle.[2]
