Draft:Ismail Uddin (Councillor)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ismail Uddin is a British-Bangladeshi independent politician and student who currently serves as a councillor for Bowling and Barkerend ward on Bradford Council. Elected in 2024 at the age of 19,[1] he is believed to be the youngest independent councillor of British-Bangladeshi heritage in the UK.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Uddin was born and raised in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and is of Bangladeshi descent. He began community activism as a teenager and later enrolled in a BA Politics degree at the University of Leeds.[2]

Political Career

[edit]

Uddin was elected in May 2024 as an independent councillor during a wave of support for independent candidates in Bradford, particularly in wards with large Muslim populations.[3][4]

As a councillor, he has been vocal on issues affecting youth, housing, and political representation. In October 2024, he called for urgent cross-party efforts to tackle youth violence following a fatal stabbing in his ward.[5]

He also actively supported grassroots community projects, such as a volunteer-led snow-clearing initiative in BD3, highlighting his on-the-ground engagement.[6]

Advocacy and Political Views

[edit]

Uddin has been outspoken on international justice issues, especially the situation in Gaza. In October 2024, he criticised Labour councillors for walking out of a Bradford Council meeting disrupted by pro-Palestine activists calling for divestment from arms companies.[7]

In 2025, he spoke out publicly after receiving a formal warning from the University of Leeds over his involvement in Palestine solidarity protests, arguing it was an attack on his freedom of speech.[2]

Recognition

[edit]

Uddin has gained national attention for his activism and is seen as a prominent young voice within British Muslim and South Asian political circles. His election was widely reported as a significant moment for British-Bangladeshi political representation.[1]
