Comment: Seems to largely use unreliable sources, and the game fails the Metacritic test in terms of having reviews from major outlets. It seems to fail WP:GNG. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 12:23, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

I See Red is a sci-fi twin-stick shooter roguelite video game developed in Argentina by the independent studio Whiteboard Games and published by Gameforge on PC and by RedDeer.Games on Nintendo Switch. It was released on October 24th, 2022 for PC via the Steam and Epic Games stores, and for the Nintendo Switch store in February 26th, 2025.[1] It is planned to be released on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5.[2]
In the game, the player controls an outlaw traversing space in search of vengeance, and must raid and destroy several spaceships while becoming stronger, while cloning himself to avoid death. I See Red has a black, white and red color palette, and its artstyle has earned it several awards, including the Eye-Poppingly Beautiful Award in the 2022 Rogue Jam[3] and the Best Visual Art and Design award in the 2022 Game Connection x ChinaJoy.[4][5]
Gameplay
[edit]To advance in I See Red, players must raid different enemy spaceships through a combination of melee and ranged weapons, active and passive skills, and a mechanical grappling hook that can be used to grab objects and get closer to enemies, as well as activate certain interactive elements of the levels. The hook, a central part of gameplay, becomes "loaded" after a certain amount of kills, which enables it to perform a Brutal Murder to instantly take down any enemy with the exception of bosses. The character also has a "rage" meter, that fills when dealing and receiving damage. Once the rage meter is full, the player can enter a Rage Mode with increased damage reduction and melee damage, and a permanently charged hook for unlimited Brutal Murders.[6]
Since I See Red is a roguelite, when the player character runs out of health, unless a passive skill prevents it, the player character is cloned and the game starts over from the first level, or spaceship. Players can get permanent upgrades in between deaths or "runs", which increase damage reduction, health points, movement speed, among others. These upgrades can be bought with Printing Matter, a collectible found in enemy spaceships.
Apart from permanent upgrades, the player character can be empowered through passives, which are collected throughout a run and lost upon death. These passives affect gameplay in several ways, like enabling bullets to bounce off walls, allowing the player to heal off the bodies of enemies, or preventing death by triggering a final Rage Mode. Passives can also be corrupt, which means a useful property is balanced by a negative one, like doubling ranged damage at the cost of halving the player's health points. Passives come in different rarities, which affects the likelihood of the player finding them: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary.
I See Red has three types of enemies (humans, aliens, and robots), and four bosses (prologue, human, alien, and final). Human-type enemies are found in the first sector, alien-type enemies in the second sector, and robot-type enemies in the third sector. Players must beat three spaceships to advance to the next sector. Each type of enemy has its own, distinct ship environment, AI behaviour, consumables, skills and weapons.[7][8]
Plot
[edit]I See Red tells a dark tale of revenge, where players take on the role of an outlaw traversing space in search of a person that wronged him and destroyed his life. The protagonist is so angry and focused on fulfilling his purpose that his world has turned colorless except for what he most cares about: his wrath and the red blood of his enemies.[8]
Characters
[edit]- Matthew Taurus, the protagonist. Once a multi-honored officer of the Empire, the tragic deaths of his wife and daughter scarred him profoundly. He wanted to be like his father, a man that fought for justice and for what is right. In his blindness to be like him and despite his good intentions, he ended up making mistakes along his path; mistakes others would still call selfless heroism. Even though it might seem like he lost his way in the end, deep down he is still doing what he thinks is right.[9]
- Viktor Ivanov, the main antagonist. A commissioner and former member of the space military with access to the biggest arsenal the Empire has at its disposal, plus thousands of loyal but corrupt officers, followers and illegitimate business partners. Resources he will not doubt to abuse to further his side businesses.
- Albert Valleywatch, the protagonist's helper. A technician, engineer, chemist, data scientist, and all-around genius. He worked in the Research and Development department of the Advanced Tactics division within the police of the Empire, experimenting with the latest weapon and transportation technology. While working with unstable Printing Matter technology to build a cloning device capable of bringing back those who perished while on duty, he was met with enormous opposition from the government, which accused him of acting immorally. Years later, now on his own, Valleywatch now seeks anyone who can help him obtain Printing Matter to perfect his creations.
- Joan Taurus, the protagonist's daughter. An 11-year-old girl that wanted to be a musician. That was her entire world. She always found someone to be her audience; not even the dog could escape her perseverance.
- Lucia Taurus, the protagonist's wife. An interplanetary-famous viola player, and one of the most listened-to artists in the Lapsus streaming service. Before retiring, she had won the highest possible award on nine different planets. She met her husband while being escorted in a police raid that happened during a concert that she was playing. Apparently, there was a terrorist threat that forced an evacuation.
Development
[edit]In 2019, some members of Whiteboard Games worked together on a time-travel puzzler called Tempus Vitae, a game that they presented at that year's Bit Bang Fest in Argentina. Once that was finished, they started working together on a new title. Development of I See Red started in March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, as a university project for Da Vinci school's Design and Video game Programming course. Eventually, the game grew as a thesis project and, once the developers graduated, they decided to continue it further to a commercial enterprise. While in the search for a publisher for I See Red, Whiteboard made contact with the Neutrón Project Accelerator.[10]
The game uses the Unity Engine.[11]
The development team of I See Red worked remotely using time-tracking software such as Clockify. Finishing the game took over 40,238 hours of work, tracked across all twelve areas of game production over the course of two years.[12][13]
In June 2022, Whiteboard Games announced a partnership with Gameforge to be I See Red's publisher. Gameforge is the leading publisher of very popular MMOs, including AION, OGame, NosTale, Ikariam, and Swords of Legends Online. In 2022, Gameforge partnered also with Trigon: Space Story, their first indie title, with I See Red joining to expand their catalog of single-player games while also being their first game from a Latin American studio.[14][15]
In spite of being developed in Argentina, a Spanish-speaking country, I See Red was first conceived in English, and then translated internally to Spanish. While the game has no dialogues, it still contains more than 10,000 unique words. The remaining localization was done by Gameforge, adding French, German, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Italian and Turkish as available languages. In Chinese markets, the name “I See Red” was accompanied by the tagline 血海雷霆, which translated literally means “a thunderstorm over a bloody sea”.[16]
I See Red was released for PC on Monday, October 24th, 2022, in the Steam and Epic Games stores.[17]
On August 23rd, 2023, Whiteboard Games announced on Steam that they were parting ways with Gameforge as I See Red’s PC publisher.[18]
On February 9th, 2024, it was announced that I See Red was compatible and available to play on the Steam Deck.[19][20]
On November 28th, 2024, polish publisher RedDeer.Games and Whiteboard Games announced a partnership to port and release I See Red on Nintendo Switch.[21][22][23][24][25] The original release date was February 6th, 2025, but was later delayed.[26][27][28] I See Red launched on Nintendo Switch on February 26th of the same year.[1][29][30]
Reception
[edit]I See Red has won several awards in video game events around the world. In 2021, it won the "Best Game of MPVP" at the Argentine event EVA Play[31], and the "Most Irreverent Game" at the VIT Awards of Costa Rica[32]. In 2022, it won the "Best Visual Art and Design" award at Game Connection x ChinaJoy's Indie Game Development Awards[33] and the "Eye-Poppingly Beautiful" award at the Rogue Jam.[34]
During the Rogue Jam, I See Red was described by Matt Casamassina, co-founder of IGN Entertainment and founder and CEO of Rogue, as "super distinct; great black and white style with this red juxtaposed violence. It just works. The detail in this brutal, isometric world is incredible as well. But it has all the gameplay substance to back up the style. And that means: tight, intuitive controls; fluid, fast-paced battles; and this great rewarding sense of progression."[34]
On December 14th, 2022, I See Red was featured by the Unity Engine on its Creator Spotlight livestream and blog for a deep dive into the technical aspects of its artstyle, cutscenes and visual effects.[35]
In 2023, I See Red received the Argentine Seal of Good Design, which distinguishes national industry products that stand out for their innovation and design quality.[36][37]
