Martín Cuervo (Madrid, Spain, 24th November 1987) is a Spanish film director, screenwriter, actor and musician.
The son of a film technician and a flight attendant, Martín Cuervo grew up among sets and apple boxes on his father's shoots, which instilled in him at a young age a love for cinematography.[1] He was an actor and child model from the ages of 6 to 10, appearing in series with small roles and in children's clothing catalogues. He directed his first short film at the age of 17 digitally with his classmates. He was accepted into RESAD on a drama course in 2006, he didn't finish the course, and at the same time studied acting at the Juan Carlos Corazza School.[1] He was nominated for a Goya Award in 2009, and was the youngest short film director to achieve this.[2] In 2012 he released his first track "Batalla" under EMI, using the alter ego Sethler.[3]In 2016 he released his second track “Negociación” with the independent label Mushroom Pillow.[4] In 2021 his first feature length film was released with him as director and screenwriter, “Con quién viajas (Carpoolers)”, produced by Álamo productions and A contracorriente.[5]
Film Career
[edit]In the winter of 2006, at just 19 years old, he wrote "Final", which would ultimately be his first short film, starring Imanol Arias and Manuela Paso. Filmed in 2007, it premiered at SEMINCI, winning the audience award for best Spanish short film.[6] At the end of 2008 he was nominated for the Goya award for best fiction short film.[2]
At the beginning of that same year he shot "Abandonao" as part of the Avid short film marathon in the Semana de Cine de Medina del Campo, which had to be filmed with in 30 hours and then edited in another 30. He himself starred and the idea was, as the competition required, developed on the fly. He one the first award of the competition.[7]
In 2008 he also directed "Último minuto", a story about domestic violence straring Chema Muñoz and Joel Gómez.[8]
In 2009 he shot his third short film, which concluded his trilogy on parents and children: "La vida que me queda", with Javier Pereira, the peculiar story of a young man with Asperger syndrome that takes literally his mother's refrain that he has 7 lives like a cat. It premiered in 2010 at the community of Madrid's 12th short film showcase.[9] In 2010 "Pluriempleo" also premiered, another video comedy, the product of another marathon, this time promoted by the Ministry of Labour. In 2011 "Someone like you" was released, starring Willy Toledo and Sancho Gracia. These were his first steps into the comedy genre.[10]
After a break in which he dedicated himself mostly to promotion and to directing video clips, in 2021 he released his first feature film Con quién viajas (Carpoolers), a road trip movie about a blablacar trip in a comedy tone with thriller overtones. The film stars Salva Reina, Ana Polvorosa, Andrea Duro and Pol Monen.[11]
Concurrently, La última pregunta (The Last Question) was released, a play for 'Las noches de la suite', starring Andrea Duro, Paula Prendes and Raúl Mérida. The play ran for five months to great success.[12]
