Horae Beatae Mariae Virginis is a French thumb-sized miniature illuminated manuscript book of hours, a prayer book for lay people, written in Latin in the late 15th or early 16th century.[1] Despite its tiny format, the manuscript contains 13 full-page miniatures, numerous gold initials and even a bookmark.[1] The decorations are typical of French prayer books from the late 15th and early 16th century,[1] but here in an unusually tiny size. They appear from their style to have been made in Tours, France.[2]
By the 20th century, the manuscript belonged to the library of the Polish magnate Zamoyski family.[1] After World War II the family library was donated to the National Library of Poland, to which the manuscript now belongs.[1] Since May 2024, the manuscript is exhibited at a permanent exhibition in the Palace of the Commonwealth in Warsaw.[3][failed verification][1]
The manuscript contains a book of hours, daily prayers asking for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.[1]
