Helen Rita Sykes (born 02 August 1957) is Fijian marine biologist, environmental consultant and scientist of British origin.
Life
[edit]Sykes was born in Preston, Lancashire, UK, then she was 7 moved to spend all of her childhood in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, where she attended Lancaster Girls Grammar School. After living and working at Hope Hospital throughout the 1980s, she obtained an HNC Applied Sciences, Stockport College of Technology, UK in 1984.
In 1996, after 13 years working in biological research in the universities and hospitals of England and Saudi Arabia, and another 7 years as a dive instructor in the islands of the Caribbean and Central America, Helen came to Fiji and formed the company Marine Ecology Consulting [1] . Originally British, she is now a dual UK/Fijian citizen.
Helen Sykes is one of the most experienced marine ecologists working in the field of marine assessment for development projects in Fiji and the surrounding region.
She works in coral reef and marine resource conservation and management, including over 80 Marine and Mangrove Resource Assessments as part of Environmental Impact Assessments and Environmental Management Plans.
She is registered with the Fijian Ministry of Environment as an Environmental Impact Assessment Consultant Subject Specialist in marine flora and fauna, coral, marine protected areas, and sustainable tourism uses of the reef environment.
Helen is one of the founder members of the Fiji Locally Managed Marine Areas Network (FLMMA) [2]and works closely with village communities on marine conservation.
She is the author of multiple reports on the status of coral reefs and marine populations in Fiji and the wider South Pacific, in partnership with international conservation and educational organisations.
In Fiji Helen has worked on development projects related to tourism, jetty extensions, oil pipelines, sewage plants and road developments .
