Haji Asmat Ali Bepari was a renowned Muslim philanthropist, devout individual, generous benefactor, and education enthusiast from the village of Paltakanda (Chandiber) in Bhairab Upazila, Kishoreganj District, Bangladesh. He was widely known across the country as the "Great Benefactor of Bhairab (Danbeer)" due to his immense charitable contributions.
He dedicated a significant portion of his wealth to the advancement of education in his district and to alleviating the suffering and poverty of the underprivileged. His name became
synonymous with numerous institutions. With a noble mission to eradicate ignorance, he devoted himself to spreading the light of education in the underdeveloped region of Bhairab.
Birth
[edit]Haji Asmat Ali Bepari was born in the village of Chandiber (Paltakanda) in Bhairab Upazila, Kishoreganj District, under the greater Mymensingh Division in what was then British India and is now part of modern-day Bangladesh.
Contributions
[edit]Due to his philanthropic activities and generosity, Haji Asmat Ali Bepari became a legendary figure in the greater Mymensingh region and Kishoreganj District. Even today, his name is often cited as a benchmark of charity and benevolence.
Haji Asmat Government College, Bhairab
[edit]The prestigious and historically significant Haji Asmat Government College was established in 1947 in the heart of Bhairab through the collective efforts of the great philanthropist Haji Asmat Ali Bepari and other education enthusiasts. At the time, Haji Asmat Ali made an unprecedented contribution by donating 35,000 rupees unconditionally to support the college's foundation.

During its early years, the college was approved by the University of Calcutta. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the then Prime Minister of Undivided Bengal, and the event was officiated by Syed Muazzemuddin Hossain, the then Education Minister.[1]
The college was built on 39 bighas (12.85 acres) of land. Today, it has around 6,500 students, with 30 MPO-listed teachers and 15 non-MPO teachers. Due to its high academic standards and well-maintained environment, the college has become one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the Kishoreganj District.[2]
On December 30, 2021, the Government of Bangladesh officially nationalized the college through a government proclamation.[3][4]

These institutions continue to serve communities in the fields of education, religion, and social welfare, carrying forward his legacy of generosity and service.
Residence
[edit]Located on the banks of the Meghna River, the historic and architecturally remarkable family residence of Haji Asmat Ali Bepari was established by him in 1928 AD in Paltakanda village, Bhairab Upazila. The estate comprises multiple residential buildings, including Haji Asmat Bhaban (established 1928 AD) and Haji Asmat Lodge (established 1958 AD), where his descendants continue to reside.[6]


Locally, this historic residence is widely known as "Boro Bari of Paltakanda" (The Grand House of Paltakanda).
Death
[edit]On August 21, 1967 (04 Bhadra, 1374 in the Bengali calendar), Haji Asmat Ali Bepari passed away. He was laid to rest in the family graveyard adjacent to the Haji Asmat Jame Mosque in Chandiber South Para, Bhairab Upazila.[7]
