Folsom Street East (FSE) is an LGBTQ+ fetish and kink festival held annually in New York City.
The first festival, organized by the Gay Male S-M Activists (GMSMA) was initially titled “The Leather County Fair”. It invited heterosexual people, lesbians and members of the wider S&M community into the NYC mens sex club, Mineshaft, for the first time. The next year, in 1997, the festival changed its name to Folsom Street East (in reference to the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco), was held outside,[1] and was organized annually by the GMSMA until 2009 the non-profit Folsom Street East Inc. was established. [2]. A portion of proceeds from the festival are donated to beneficiaries, announced annually. [3] [4] [5] The archives of Folsom Street East are kept by The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in New York City.[6] [7]
The Festival
Folsom Street East typically falls on Father’s Day and is an 18+ event that includes a curated kink-themed market, food, beer, DJs, demonstrations, and community outreach groups. The attending crowd typically arrive wearing fetish and kink gear. The festival takes its inspiration from the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco, though the two events have no affiliation.[8] [9] [10] [11]
FSE has been held in historically LGBTQ neighborhoods around New York City including The Meatpacking District, The West Village, and Chelsea. FSE did not occur in 2013, 2020 or 2021 due to construction and the Covid-19 Pandemic.[12] [13]
