Elen Smile (real name: Olena Valeriivna Polishchuk; born January 11, 1988) is a Ukrainian singer, songwriter, actress, stand-up comedian, presenter, and event organizer[1]. She gained recognition through her songs "Ukraine Cocaine," which earned her the Grand Prix at the Music Visual Awards[2][3], and "Dubai," which brought her international recognition[4]. She founded Miami’s first Russian-language stand-up comedy club[5].
Early years
[edit]Elen Smile was born on January 11, 1988, in Vinnytsia, Ukraine. Her father, Valery Polishchuk, transitioned from mechanical engineering to entrepreneurship, while her mother, Nadiya, focused on raising their family[6]. From childhood, Elen showed an aptitude for music and poetry and independently learned English, driven by her ambition to perform internationally[7].
Stage name
[edit]The stage name "Elen Smile" was spontaneously chosen during social media registration, becoming her artistic brand. She emphasizes that the pseudonym reflects her desire to convey positivity and joy[8].
Career
[edit]During her university years, Smile opened a travel agency providing tours in Kyiv and worked as a radio host at "Galaxy" radio[9]. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she turned to online investments and founded the online agency "liveme" for training streamers[10].
In 2022, she completed "The Hit Algorithm" songwriting course led by Ana Baston[11]. In 2023, she performed alongside the Eurovision-winning Kalush Orchestra[12]. In 2024, Smile performed in Miami at a Ukrainian Independence Day event with prominent Ukrainian artists[13].
She also acted in Ukrainian films and TV series including "The Best Weekend," "The Age Gap," "Picnic," and "Diet No. 0." In 2023, Smile participated in Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny's video "NO ME QUIERO CASAR," gaining international attention[14].
Social and cultural activities
[edit]During the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Smile released the patriotic song "Faith in the Future," widely embraced by Ukrainians as a symbol of hope and unity[15]. It later inspired remixes by Yaroslav Tretiak and Anton FreeON[16].
Smile actively promotes Ukrainian culture abroad, notably supporting art exhibitions in Miami.
Stand-up comedy
[edit]Smile founded the first Russian-language stand-up comedy club in Miami. She mentors aspiring comedians, fostering Ukrainian and Russian-language comedy abroad.
