Ditte Maria Bjerg (born July 24, 1960) is a Danish stage director, educator, and activist known for research-driven performances. Her work frequently bridges sociology, economics, and the performing arts, often addressing social issues and involving members of vulnerable communities.
Early Life
[edit]Born in Copenhagen, Bjerg attended the Danish National School of Performing Arts, graduating in 1992.[1]
Global Stories Work
[edit]In 2010, Bjerg founded Global Stories, a platform dedicated to creating research-based theatrical performances. The organization has produced several works, listed here in chronological order:
- **2013: "At skaffe og skaffe sig af med børn i den globale ulighed"** – This early work tackled global inequality and commodification, showcasing Bjerg's dedication to socially impactful theater. A tripartite interview with Bjerg, MajaLee Langvad, and Kristina Nya Glaffey discusses global inequality and the commodification of children.[2]
- **2014: "Med Andre Øjne"** – A photo exhibition and workshop collaboration exploring perspectives on cultural identity and migration. This project has been widely appreciated for its multi-disciplinary approach to storytelling.[3]
- **2014: "Made in India – Sketches from a Baby Farm"** – This performance lecture, co-created with sociologist Amrita Pande, delves into global surrogacy practices and raises critical ethical questions.[4]
- **2015: "Ni Hao Nuuk"** – A theater project examining Greenland's cultural and political challenges, engaging audiences with humor, narrative depth, and poignant commentary.[5]
- **2017: "I Am Also Somalia"** – A production addressing Somali cultural heritage and identity, featuring collaboration with Somali communities. This work has been noted for its inclusive approach and deep cultural engagement.[6]
Educator and Policy Maker
[edit]From 2014 to 2017, Bjerg chaired the Stage Art Committee under the Danish Arts Council, where she influenced national arts policy and advocated for diversity in Danish theater.[7]
In 2018, Bjerg was appointed prefect at the Malmö Theatre Academy at Lund University, where she focused on fostering cross-cultural exchange and innovation in the curriculum. In this role, she has mentored emerging artists, developed innovative curricula, and fostered international collaborations.[8]
