De Familie ('The Family') is a Dutch crime tv-show from 2025, produced by De Stokerij Schiedam to mark the 750th anniversary of Schiedam. The series consists of four episodes and is a collaboration between professional actors, young talents from De Jonge Stokerij, and local volunteers, including entrepreneurs, choirs, and community organizations. It was written and directed by Koen Wouterse.[1][2][3][4]

Story lines
[edit]The main storyline follows the sisters Hanna and Claudia van Bol'Es, who are in direct conflict over the future of the family's jenever distillery. Their opposing views on tradition versus innovation spark an internal power struggle within the family, involving even the company's employees.
A second, parallel storyline centers on a group of young people from Schiedam, including Han van Bol'Es, who stumble upon a hidden family secret through a series of coincidences. The youths uncover a part of the Van Bol'Es family history that has been deliberately kept secret, leading to a series of choices and confrontations with both their own past and that of the city. The discovery brings them into contact with individuals and power structures that extend far beyond their everyday world, giving the young characters an active role within the broader family narrative.[1]
Production
[edit]The production of De Familie began with concept development by Koen Wouterse, aimed at creating a series set in the city of Schiedam. According to Wouterse, the series is "99.4% Schiedam."[5]
Filming took place entirely in Schiedam, drawing on the historical context of the Dutch jenever industry to add authenticity to the story. The production utilized local locations and collaborated with regional partners to make the setting recognizable and relatable for the audience.[2][6][7]
Release
[edit]Each episode premieres in a Schiedam cinema: episodes one through three at the Wennekerpand, and the fourth episode at the Pathé cinema. After the premieres, each episode continues to run in theaters for several weeks. For example, episode one was initially scheduled for 22 screenings, but due to its success, four additional showings were added in the main hall of the Wennekerpand.[5]
In addition to screenings at the Wennekerpand and Pathé, episodes are also shown as part of a special arrangement at the Van der Valk hotel in Schiedam.[8]
Hamlet
[edit]De Familie was written as a prologue to William Shakespeare's Hamlet, according to Koen Wouterse.[9] For example, the character Han is derived from Hamlet, and Claudia is based on Claudius. In a possible continuation of the series, the plot of Hamlet would be adapted for the screen, with the story of season one serving as an integrated foundation for that narrative.
