David Casey is an award-winning American documentary director, producer, nonfiction TV showrunner and filmmaker. He is best known for his work on I Heart Global Warming, Ice Cold Gold, Ocean Warriors, and America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston. Casey's work focuses on global travel & adventure, social justice, music, natural history, and environmentalism.

Career

[edit]

Casey's directorial debut, Motherfucker: A Movie, premiered in 2006. Inspired by the legendary "Motherfucker" parties of the early-2000s, it takes audiences on an intimate journey into New York City's underground nightlife.[1][2]

In 2008, Casey directed I Heart Global Warming, hosted by Adam Yamaguchi, a documentary focusing on Greenland and climate change, as part of the Vanguard series for Current TV.[3]

Inspired by the film, he created the series Ice Cold Gold for Animal Planet and Discovery, which ran the series from 2013-2015.[4] He continued his work in Greenland, producing a segment there in Al Gore's An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk.[5]

Casey executive produced and showran Animal Planet's six-part series Ocean Warriors (2016) directed by Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin, with Robert Redford and Paul Allen as executive producers.[6][7] It was awarded Best Limited Series - Long at the 2017 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival,[8] as well as the 2017 Genesis Award for Outstanding TV Documentary Series.[9]

In October 2018, Casey conceived and directed Intel's Above the Arctic: An Intel Drone Expedition in which he and his crew successfully tracked polar bears north of Svalbard, Norway through non-invasive drones, promoting the use of drones in future arctic conservation.[10]

Casey executive produced and directed Sampled (2022)[11] and the second season of Family Legacy (2025) on Paramount+.[12] In 2023, Casey executive produced and directed the second season of PBS's America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston. It was nominated by the Television Critics Association for Outstanding Achievement in News and Information.[13]
