The school is a gated campus composed of both ground building and high-rise buildings, placed around a wide yard.

When you enter its premises, you'll see first the principal's office next to the pathway into the yard that branched into multiple roads leading to various classrooms and buildings. After the pathway to the right is the school library, used as a room for student teachers who will do teaching demonstration guided and supervised by licensed professional teachers, when not teaching.

When you stand exactly outside the gate at the center, you will notice two high-rise buildings in the left and right. On the left is the Senior High School Department building, while the other one is on the right, another high-rise building comprised of a classroom and science laboratory below and computer laboratory above. Both of these are two-storey buildings.

The "Danao Attuned to World News" DAWN Publication

[edit]

The DAWN Publication, or the "Danao Attuned to World News", is an annual-issue school paper/publication of the Danao National High School, released every end of the school year, usually on the fourth quarter of the school year ("fourth quarter" is a phrase used to describe the last part of the school year in Philippine schools, with the whole school year divided into four parts: the first quarter, second quarter, third quarter and the fourth quarter).

This magazine-style publication features the school's participation on extracurricular activities and events, along with the awards given by the organizers to the school management or to the participants. It also features its successes, accomplishments, and internally-organized events such as the annual February "King and Queen of Hearts" featuring participants on ramp modelling with male and female paired up symbolizing the "month of love" (as February 14 is Valentine's Day), among others.

The school publication has staffers, known as "The DAWN Staffers". The editor-in-chief is the highest position of hierarchy in the staff of the DAWN, followed by the associate editor and the managing editor; circulation manager comes next, the person who has this position usually governs the circulation of the school paper in the whole campus; sports editor, a writer who usually features sports in his/her articles that will be published alongside the school paper; news editor is the fifth position (placement, from top to bottom with the first position being the editor-in-chief [from the school paper placement of each hierarchical position of the staffers]), usually features on his/her writings, news, either on school or nationwide in the Philippines or worldwide; feature editor comes next,

The Buwan ng Wika 2024 Stampede Incident

[edit]

On August 2, 2024, when the opening program of the 2024 Buwan ng Wika (Month of Language) ended on that day's late afternoon, many students headed straight to the gate to wait for the clock to hit 4:00 P.M. (Philippine Standard Time), the time the school management assigned for the guard to open the gate, and the students know when the clock hits 4 o'clock (in the afternoon) because the guard will sound the bell secured beside the guard post.

Even before the clock hits 4 o'clock, an estimated to be a thousand students was already on standby near the gate, some was standing near the gates, while others sit on the cemented ladder in front of the school library or the principal's office.

Most of the group of students waiting usually will stand just near the gate to achieve getting out of the campus first amongst the rest. Some favors to be the last to go, staying on the second floor of the building on the right where the school's computer laboratory was situated.

However, when the guard finally opened the gate, the students in the back pushed the ones in front of them forward, and it caused the crowd to compress, thus, causing the school's first incident of a stampede.

As the situation escalated, the crowd compressed more. The happening was now uncontrollable by the guard on duty at that time. In a video released on a social media platform, Facebook, by an account named "Ernest Hashim Ayento Socorin", the video showed students pushing those in front of them towards the exit while some unsuspected individuals in the front was pushed furthermore outside, causing some students to fall. In the audio of the released footage, someone can be heard saying, "Ajaw ko ninjo i-tud ba." (Please don't push me.)

The person filming the footage finally managed to proceed forward as the crowd dissipated, showing cluster of students already standing outside the school. Later on, the video showed a junior high school student fallen to the ground, crying, as some of her like assisted her to stand up, and was possibly stepped on by many students as the people forcefully stepped outside without knowing she was on the ground.

The scene cuts to a view, where the camera was from afar filming students walking towards their respective households, disregarding the stampede incident.

On August 3, 2024, as more additional information was gathered, the student that was filmed crying while helped to stand up was a Grade 7 female student, Jessiemae T. Vistal. She was rushed to a nearby government-owned hospital in Catigbian, Bohol, Philippines, where she was redirected to the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital (GCGMH) in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines for required additional medical tests that the first hospital lacked, according to a statement from an interviewed Grade 7 teacher which preferred to be anonymous.

Also one of those victimized by the stampede, was a Grade 11 student which is unidentified but the report about it was unconfirmed if it was true or a hoax.

Some also felt dizziness and lightheadedness during the compression of crowd in the incident, because of the lack of oxygen, like the one Grade 8 student experiencing the aforementioned symptoms of a possible faint, but was contained as her friends rushed to help.

Following the incident, the school management has planned its preventive measures to avoid the stampede to happen once again. The guard will now warn the students first to avoid pushing and to be patient, while in some cases, divided the students in half, one group will first go out then the other.

After the incident, the guard on duty which usually their duties last for a week before the other one, was never on duty tomorrow that day and the other one dutied instead. A solicitation of PHP 5.00 was conducted for students while teachers contribute PHP 50.00, for the expenses and medical bills when Vistal was confined in the hospital for 2 days.

The ones pushing from the back during the incident was later identified as groups of Grade 8 students.
