Dan Brotman is an Israeli-Canadian community worker and the executive director of the Windsor Jewish Federation (WJF)[1][2] in Windsor, Ontario. He is an Israeli citizen and veteran of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).[3]
Community Impact
[edit]As executive director of the WJF, Brotman launched "Welcome Home Windsor" program[2] to attract Jewish professionals like doctors, to the region. This initiative promotes Jewish immigration to Canada and provides resources on immigration and professional re-licensing. In December 2023, Brotman faced criticism from Paul Hirschson, Israel's Consul General in Montreal. He accused him of "cynically exploiting"[4] Israel's conflict with Gaza by encouraging Israeli doctors to emigrate. The dispute played out on social media and drew attention from Israeli media outlet, the Jerusalem Post.[5][2]
Brotman has been emphasizing on vocal advocacy for the Windsor Jewish community for their growth in the region.[2] Following the October 2023 attacks on Israel, he called for increased protection for Jewish institutions in Windsor. Also, he urged local politicians to avoid inflaming tensions between the Jewish and Middle Eastern communities.[1]
Personal Life
[edit]Brotman is an Israeli citizen and IDF veteran. He has expressed concerns about Israel's judicial reforms, warning they could lead to authoritarianism.[4] He argues that governments should focus on security and social services rather than policing individual choices like emigration or religious practice.[4] Brotman's role continues to highlight the claim on “challenges faced by Jewish communities” in the diaspora. Regardless of this claim, his initiatives have sparked controversy, and seek support from local community members as a vital facilitation for his desired Windsor's Jewish community.[4]
