Cornelius Hartz (born September 28, 1973 in Lübeck) is a German novelist, non-fiction writer and translator.
Biography
[edit]Cornelius Hartz studied Latin, ancient Greek and English literature at the University of Hamburg, where he completed his doctorate in Latin philology in 2007 under Dorothee Gall with a thesis on Greek and Latin lyric poetry. He then worked as an editorial assistant at Verlag Philipp von Zabern in Mainz and as a freelance editor and translator.
His first novel was published in 2008, followed by numerous non-fiction and other fiction titles. In addition to his work as an author, he also works as a translator and has translated works by Edward Carey, Daniel Mason, Catherine Nixey and Eli Cranor, among others. He has also provides a new translation of the poems of the Roman writer Catullus into German. Hartz currently works as a freelance writer and translator in Hamburg. He was one of the first authors of the Droste publishers' "Happiness Hotspots" ("Glücksorte") book series and has written three volumes for the series so far.
Hartz is a lecturer at the Bundesakademie für kulturelle Bildung Wolfenbüttel.[1] He is a member of the Association of the German Association of Translators of Literary Works, VdÜ. In 2024, he was awarded the Hamburger Literaturpreis (Hamburg Literature Prize) for his translation of Daniel Mason's novel Up in the Woods.[2]
