Chuah Joon Huang is a Malaysian academic, engineer, and university administrator. He is the current President and CEO of Southern University College (Southern UC) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.[1] Chuah is known for his contributions to engineering research, higher education leadership, and technology policy, particularly in the fields of integrated circuit (IC) design, artificial intelligence (AI), and computer vision.

Early Life and Education

Chuah Joon Huang earned his Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) with First Class Honours from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He then pursued a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) before completing a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Technology Policy and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) at the University of Cambridge.

Chuah began his academic career as an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering at the University of Malaya, where he was also the Director of the VLSI and Image Processing (VIP) Research Group. His research focused on computer vision, image processing, and integrated circuit design, areas critical for advancements in AI, robotics, and digital signal processing.

His expertise in Very-Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) Design and Analog IC Design has led to multiple research publications and industry collaborations in automotive microcontrollers, AI-driven chipsets, and industrial automation.

Industry Experience

Before entering academia, Chuah worked in the semiconductor industry, contributing to the design and development of advanced microprocessors. His roles included:

  • Intel Corporation – Integrated Circuit (IC) Design Engineer, working on next-generation network processors.
  • Freescale Semiconductor (formerly Motorola, SPS) – Senior Product Development Engineer and Senior Test Engineer, specializing in high-performance automotive microcontrollers.

Leadership in Higher Education

Chuah was appointed 4th President and CEO of Southern University College in 2024.[2] Under his leadership, Southern UC has focused on:

  • Expanding STEM education and AI-driven research programs.
