Canadian True Crime is an independent true crime podcast created by Kristi Lee in 2016 as a personal passion project. Lee is originally from Australia but has lived in Canada for over a decade.[1]

The first episode was released in January of 2017. At the time, Lee worked full time in communications and marketing, and produced podcast episodes in her closet at night after her children went to bed. At the time, she said her goal in producing the show was to honour the victims and survivors of crime.[2]

With no marketing or promotion, the first Canadian True Crime episode was downloaded more than 400 times in the first 24 hours.[3]

Episodes are scripted using court documents, inquiry reports, news archives and relevant studies, and often include the participation of victims and survivors.[4]

Since 2020, Canadian True Crime has been represented by Acast Canada for hosting, distribution and sales. Kristi Lee remains the podcast’s primary researcher, writer and producer.[5]
