Cablenet Communication Systems PLC (operating as Cablenet), is a Cyprus based telecommunications services provider primarily owned by the Maltese telecommunications company GO.[1] It is the second largest internet service provide (ISP) in Cyprus by number of subscribers, behind CYTA.[2] In addition to being an ISP, the company provides services relating to fixed telephony, cable TV and mobile telephony.

[edit]The company began its operations as NV Cable Communication Systems[3][4] in 2004[5] under the Cablenet brand with the aim of providing cable TV service in Cyprus.[6] In August 2006 the company was renamed Cablenet Communications Systems Ltd. coinciding with its takeover by the C.N. Shiacolas Group of Companies (CNS).[7][8]
Following its purchase by the latter, Cablenet introduced internet
Investment and Majority Ownership by Go p.l.c & Expansion of Mobile Telephony Services (2014 - present)
[edit]On 28 March 2014, Go p.l.c. purchased 25% of Cablenet's issued share capital.[9] In January 2016, Go became the company's controlling shareholder, and currently maintains 70.2% of the company's total issued shares.[10][11]
In 2015 Cablenet began offering mobile telephony services, through the launch of its virtual mobile network (MVNO) on the CytaVoda network.[12]
In May 2019, Cablenet acquired the fourth mobile network licence in Cyprus after bidding €7 million, enabling it to build and operate its own independent mobile network.[13] As a part of the licensing condition, Cablenet is required to launch and operate a 4G network covering 75% of Cyprus (under government control) by 31 December 2023. In order to aid its transition from an MVNO to a mobile network operator (MNO), in May 2021 Cablenet entered into a memorandum of understanding with CYTA (under a RAN-sharing agreement) to use the latter's infrastructure and network, to offer mobile services to Cablenet’s current and future clients.[14]
In December 2020 Cablenet participated in the Cyprus Government's 5G licence auction, winning a licence enabling it to build and operate a 5G network.[15]
Marketshare
[edit]According to statistics released by the Office of Electronic Communications & Postal Regulations (OCECPR), in the fourth quarter of 2021, Cablenet was the second largest ISP in Cyprus, after CYTA (which has a market share of 57.4%), controlling 23.5% of the market.[16]
