C N Sreevalsan[1](born on 23 May 1967) is an Indian Writer-Director and playwright, renowned for his contributions to the Malayalam entertainment industry. With a career spanning over three decades, he has penned numerous television serials, plays and movies. He has also earned recognition for his dedication to preserving and documenting Kerala's Folk, Ritual and Classical art forms.

Early Life and Education

Sreevalsan was born in Kannur District, Kerala, India. During the period of doing his Master's degree in Literature, he started writing and Directing Plays for the well stablished Theatre Group, C.K.G Theatres. Then his passion for story telling and drama led led him to pursue the B.T.A (Bachelor in Theatre Arts)[2] degree from School of Drama, Thrissur, under the guidance of Prof. G. Sankara Pillai.[3]

Career

Theatre and Early Contributions

Sreevalsan began his career as a Lyricist, when he was a final year degree student, penning the song "Yetho Smrithithan' for the movie 'Abhlashangale Abhayam' sung by K.J. Yeasudas.[4] When he was a student at School of Drama, he led a significant project under America's Ford Foundation[5] to document Kerala's Traditional Art Forms. His dedication to Drama, earned a National Award for Radio Drama, received from Shri H.K.L. Bhagat, Minister for Information and Broadcasting.[6] The Radio Drama was broadcast from Calicut All India Radio, titled "Thambaachi Baalante Manorathangal'.

Television and Movie

Sreevalsan transitioned into television and movie, creating iconic serials like Mohangal (Directed by Rajasenan), Jwalayay[7] (Produced by Mega star Mammootty), Shamanathaalam[8] (Produced by Mathrubhumi and Directed by Shyamaprasad), Alakal, Anantham (Written and Directed by himself), Oomakkuyil (Produced by Central Pictures) etc. were his most notable works as skilled writer and director.

Also written and directed the first Malayalam Autism Movie 'Urava",[9] demonstrating his commitment to socially relevant cinema, which was performed by Jyothirmayi, Nedumudi Venu, Irshad, Premkumar, K.B. Ganeshkumar, Praveena etc.

  • Multiple accolades for television serials, including Grihalakshmi Award, Nana Award, Buddha Award etc.
  • 2020 Kerala Sangeet Natak Akademi Award[10] for overall contributions to Drama.

Personal Life

Sreevalsan married to Reena. Two children Sidharth and Sayanora, both are married. Resides in Trivandrum, Kerala. His dedication to the visual art forms continues to the upcoming projects.
