Burghtown Music Group is a hip hop collective from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, known for their independent releases, lyrical depth, and live performances across the city’s underground scene. Founded in 2001, the group has released multiple mixtapes and albums, often blending street commentary with soulful instrumentation. Their work has been featured by WAMO 106, Pittsburgh City Paper, and TimeBomb.
Background
[edit]The group emerged from Pittsburgh's East End in the early 2000s. Rooted in friendship, family, and shared experience, Burghtown developed a reputation for blending street narratives with introspective commentary. The name "Burghtown" reflects a deep connection to their hometown.
Origins and Early History
[edit]The roots of Burghtown trace back to high school friends Randy Martin (Gifted aka Gift Money) and Raymont Geeter (Swiper), who began recording with Stevie B, the group’s main R&B vocalist. Jabir Green (B-Loc aka 12 Jewelz), Randy’s cousin, soon joined. Lavar Bradley (Prototype), originally from Youngstown, Ohio, connected with Randy while working in event planning at a hotel in Station Square.
Their first track as a group, "Nothing Wrong," was recorded with engineer Roach. Much of their catalog was produced by Diezel (Garfield) and Xeno (East Liberty / McKees Rocks).
Local producer Buck 50 joined prior to the release of We Here Now Vol. 1 in 2006, contributing production, artwork, and creative direction.
Burghtown’s early releases were physically distributed through Pittsburgh-based record vendors including Stedeford’s Record Shop, Time Bomb, Upbeat Records, Fast Eddie’s, and 720 Records.
