It premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 9, 2024. [1][2]

Plot

[edit]

Alex, a film student in Los Angeles, grapples with the death of his estranged father, a once-promising screenwriter. While sorting through his belongings, Alex finds a cryptic, unfinished screenplay titled Billy Knight. Consumed by the mystery, Alex embarks on a personal and artistic journey, aided by fellow student Emily. The enigmatic Billy Knight (played by Pacino) manifests as a dreamlike figure symbolizing memory, regret, and unrealized ambition.[3][4]

Production

[edit]

Billy Knight was first announced in December 2022, with Al Pacino joining the project as the titular character.[5] The film was written and directed by Alec Griffen Roth in his directorial debut, drawing inspiration from his own father’s life and artistic struggles.[3] Roth stated that he intended to explore “what we leave behind creatively, and how art becomes a conversation between generations.”[6]

Filming took place in early 2023 in Los Angeles, primarily using practical university locations and local studios.[7] According to production designer Maria Jackson, the visual aesthetic aimed to blend "classic 1970s Hollywood textures with the surrealism of memory and grief."[8]

The film was produced by Warren Fischer, Autumn Bailey-Ford, and Chad Rosen. It was independently financed with support from local production grants and private investors.[1]
