Nasrizal bin Ngasri (born 30 August 1980) better known as Bell Ngasri is a Malaysian actor and comedian.[2][3] Prolific in television and film in Malaysia since the 1980s, he began his career as a child actor, then expanded his talent when he became an adult and is known for his ability to play with the audience's emotions through various characters his acting.[4][5]
Among the films he has starred in are Puteri Impian (1997), Cinta 200 Ela (2002), Castello (2006), Tolong Awek Aku Pontianak (2011), Cicakman 3 (2015), Bulan dan Pria Terhebat (2020) and 18 Puasa di Kampong Pisang (2021). Nasrizal has also acted in several TV drama series including Idaman (1998–2001), KL Menjerit The Series (2008), Ahmad Durrah (2010), Pengembaraan Jason Murad (2015), Bibik-Bibikku (2016) and Kampong Pisang Bersiri-siri (2020–2021). He is the son of the famous broadcaster, Ngasri Sain and younger brother of Naszeli Ngasri and older brother of Anne Ngasri and Darling Ngasri.[6][7][8]
Early life
[edit]He was born on 30 August 1980 at Assunta Hospital, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.[2] He is the third child of 6 siblings to his parents, former radio presenter and recording artist Ngasri Sain[9][10] and his wife, veteran actress Habibah Jaafar (sister of Rashidah Jaafar).[2] His siblings, Nasliza, Naszeli, Nasreen, Anne and Nassuhada are also involved in acting. After obtaining his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Nasrizal continued his studies to the Diploma level in broadcasting at the TV3 Academy (later known as the Malaysian Integrative Media Institute or MIIM).
Career
[edit]Inheriting artistic talent from his father, Ngasri, who was a former Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) announcer, and his mother, Habibah Jaafar (sister of actress Rashidah Jaafar) who was also active in acting, Nasrizal began his acting career during his preschool years. He was first introduced to the silver screen in the film Yassin (1988) directed by Tan Sri Kamarul Ariffin when he was 7 years old.
In 1988, he and his two sisters, Nasreen (Darling) and Naszriah (Anne) starred in commercials before their talent was spotted by drama producers at RTM and TV3. In 1992, Nasrizal acted in the dramas Dam Dam Dum and Cinta Mastura which were both broadcast on TV1. For his performance in Cinta Mastura, he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor category at the 1992 Seri Angkasa Awards. He played an additional role as Kassim in the film Perempuan, Isteri & .....? (1993) starring Sofia Jane and Nasir Bilal Khan. It also starred his two sisters, Darling and Anne.
He also acted in the film Cinta Kita (1995) playing the role of Epi and was a guest actor in the sitcom IQ Genius. In 1997, Nasrizal acted with Shaheizy Sam in the telefilm Pa directed by Shaharuddin Sulaiman playing the role of a naughty school student named Ajoy. His performance in this telefilm qualified him to win the Best Supporting Actor trophy at the 1998 Screen Awards. From 1998 to 2001, Nasrizal's acting career continued when he was in his teens by starring in the drama Idaman alongside other actors including Jalaluddin Hassan, Deanna Yusoff, Janet Khoo, Kartina Aziz, Dian P. Ramlee, Sean Ghazi and Nana Nurgaya.
He also acted alongside Khalid Salleh in the role of Shamsul in the film Kaki Bakar directed by U-Wei Haji Saari based on the novel Barn Burning by American writer, William Faulkner. This film was screened in 1995 at the Cannes Film Festival 1995 which took place in France, but was not screened in Malaysia until 6 years later, namely in 2001. He also appeared in the telefilm Neon (2003) directed by Mohd Feroz Abdul Kader starring the late Faizal Yusup and Eric Fuzi with many actors including Rashidi Ishak, Azhar Sulaiman, Aziz M. Osman, Saiful Apek, Sofi Jikan, Aziz Sattar, Kuswadinata, Abby Abadi, Serina Redzuawan, Zila Bakarin, Rita Rudaini, Kartina Aziz and many more.[11]
In 2004, he acted in the film Bisikan Remaja, followed by the VCD telefilm, See You di IPT performed by the nasyid group UNIC. Nasrizal acted in two films in 2006, namely Castello as Nik and Cinta as Amin. In the film 1957: Hati Malaya (2007) directed by Shuhaimi Baba, he played the role of the former Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang, Sardon Jubir. Also in 2007, he starred in the web drama Kerana Karina playing the role of Boy, a hairdresser.
2008 continued to be a year for Bell to excel on his own canvas by starring in the drama Ampang Medikal on ntv7, followed by the drama Sutun Kembali Lagi on TV9 and KL Menjerit The Series on Astro Ria. He also received an offer to act in films when he starred in the film Antoo Fighter directed by Azizi "Chunk" Adnan playing the role of Opie.
He acted in two films in 2010, namely the comedy action film Kecoh Betul starring with Saiful Apek, Nabil Ahmad, Diana Danielle and Yatt Hamzah. He played the role of Joe, a food delivery man at a fast food restaurant in the capital. After Kecoh Betul, he appeared in the superhero action film Kapoww!! Atoi The Ajaib Boy starring with Zizan Razak and Lisa Surihani.
Nasrizal did not act in any TV dramas in 2012 and 2013. However, he starred in several telefilms during that period. Among them are the telefilm series Bedah Tong Gas, Anakku Ghazali and Mana Kuali Opah?. The only film he acted in was in 2014 was Amir dan Loqman Pergi ke Laut which saw him first work under the direction of Mamat Khalid. He made a special appearance in this film.
He acted in three films in 2015, namely Rumah Pusaka Di Simpang Jalan as Markona, then followed by Cicakman 3 as Jojo and Jejak Warriors as Rahim. In the same year, he starred in the comedy drama Pengembaran Jason Murad where his wife, Farhana Fauri served as one of the scriptwriters. In 2017, he made a special appearance as Orang Kampung in the film Pak Pong directed by Fauzi Nawawi, then acted alongside Sabri Yunus, Aziz M. Osman, Rab Khalid and Man Kadir in the telefilm 16 Puasa playing the role of Ngas. Aired on 8 June 2017 on Astro First Exclusive, it tells the story of a group of villagers who like to skip their fasts and hide their activities from their families. He returned to action in its sequel, 17 Puasa in 2019.
In the same year, he acted in the film Hero: Jangan Bikin Panas starring alongside Mark Adam and Hisyam Hamid. The following year, he acted in the film Bulan dan Pria Terhebat (2020) starring Zahirah MacWilson, followed by two short films in which he acted, namely Uncle Security and Cikgu Ganti Dari Kampung. Nasrizal continued his collaboration with Mamat Khalid in the drama series Kampong Pisang Bersiri-siri and the film 18 Puasa di Kampong Pisang as well as several other films directed by Mamat by playing the role of Barkoba, as well as his acting character giving him luck in his acting career.
He also hosted the reality show Hijrahkan Laguku with Faizal Ismail which was broadcast on TV Alhijrah from 2021 to 2022. Nasrizal's first music video appearance was through the music video of the song "24434" performed by the group Floor 88. Nasrizal also starred in a short film produced by Pihak Berkuasa Kemajuan Pekebun Kecil Perusahaan Getah (RISDA) entitled Cakaran which was broadcast on RISDA's official YouTube channel.
