Comment: Notability is not an issue. However, this was written as a highly promotional article that appears to be autobiographical. I did some format corrections, but there are too many more that must be done so that is the job of the original author. Read WP:COI & WP:Peacock. Ldm1954 (talk) 11:46, 5 April 2025 (UTC)

Atul Jain is an American atmospheric scientist working on biogeochemical cycles, biogeophysics, ecology, land change science as well as their effects on climate change.
As of 2025, Atul Jain is a Professor in the Department of Climate, Meteorology, and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).[1] He also serves as the faculty affiliate in the Program in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology,[2] Illinois Informatics Program, Illinois Informatics,[3] Center for Global Studies,[4] and Center for South Asian & Middle East Studies[5] at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is also a Faculty Affiliate at the Discovery Partners Institute, University of Illinois System.[6]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Jain received his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences in 1998 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.[7] He then worked as a research associate at the University of Münster, Germany, from 1988 to 1992.[8] Before joining the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) [9] in 1995, he held a postdoctoral position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California.[10]
Global Change Research
[edit]At UIUC[11], Jain applies an interdisciplinary approach to research and education, mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students. [12]. His work focuses on understanding and quantitatively modeling the two-way interactions between human activities and the global climate system.[13]
He has been a lead and contributing author to numerous Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. Jain also contributed to the 2015 U.S. National Academy of Sciences report Advancing Land Change Modeling: Opportunities and Research Requirements.[14]
Since 2013, Jain has co-authored the annual Global Carbon Budget reports through the Global Carbon Project[15], providing data on carbon emissions and their implications for global climate targets. He also led the greenhouse gas emissions budget synthesis for South Asia as part of the RECCAP2 Project,[16] a global initiative under Future Earth.[17]
Media and Press Coverage
[edit]Jain's work has been featured in media outlets, including:
- Science Daily (Sept. 8, 2005): "Climate Change Will Affect Carbon Sequestration in Oceans, Model Shows" [18].
- United Press International (March 22, 2007): "Oceans acidify from CO₂ buildup"[19].
- The Guardian (Sept. 13, 2021): "Meat accounts for nearly 60% of all greenhouse gases from food production"[20]
