Career
[edit]As a child, Ari assisted his father, an amateur photographer, in developing and printing black-and-white photographs at night in the bathroom, which had been turned into a darkroom. In the early 1980s, he studied computer programming, and was later hired by one of the first startup companies developing the technology of computerized image banks and video assisted simulators. This experience led him to pursue studies in electronics engineering, but he soon abandoned them in favor of a career in photography. He worked at his father's advertising and publishing company, where he learned the fundamentals of graphic design. During this time, he took his first steps in professional photography, covering corporate events and commercial locations. He later assisted renowned Parisian fashion photographers before securing his own commissioned work.
Editorial and publicity
[edit]With a strong focus on portraiture, his self-taught journey led him to specialize in beauty photography, collaborating with magazines such as Jardin des Modes, Cosmopolitan, Angelines, l'Officiel, Marie Claire, The British Journal of Photography and Vogue. He produced advertising campaigns for global brands including Kenzo Parfums, Cacharel, Estée Lauder, L'Oréal, Bourjois, T-Leclerc, Nina Ricci, Sephora, and Natura Brasil, as well as automotive companies such as Renault, and Volkswagen.
Artistic work
[edit]
Beyond commercial photography, Rossner has developed his own personal artistic projects:
Off-Set series: While advertising photographs are often ephemeral, Ari Rossner seeks to give his images a lasting presence through a new visual transformation. He engraves selected works from his regular photography onto offset plates, which he then reworks by hand, applying ink or oil paint in a spontaneous manner — much like a painter covering a canvas.
This act of reappropriation represents a radical artistic stance. By disrupting the traditional chain of reproduction, Rossner transforms the offset plate from a printing tool into a singular, final artwork. An industrial metal—no longer a matrix for transferring ink to paper but the final medium itself. This process strips away superficial elements such as skin color and fine details, distilling the image to its essence. In doing so, Rossner takes an iconoclastic approach to his own work, challenging conventional representation and redefining the boundaries of photographic art.
Rossner was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Cannes for this work.

Femenity series: Ari Rossner explores societal constraints on women, shaped by religious, moral, and social codes. Having worked alongside women for over two decades, he found inspiration in the Femen movement and sought to express admiration and respect for women—fighters throughout history. These works represent their right to expose their bodies, their freedom of action, their power to break the silence, and their strength as activists. In Femenity, nudity becomes a political statement. The sculptural presence of the subjects asserts their power and defies objectification. The raw tone and dramatic textures evoke a sense of battle—fierce and defiant. Yet, the series ultimately celebrates femininity and self-representation as an act of defiance.

In this provocative work, Rossner revisits Gustave Courbet’s The Origin of the World V2.0, renaming it 'The Origin of Men'. The piece critiques societal hypocrisy, particularly regarding gender dynamics. By subverting hypersexualized female imagery, he challenges the patriarchal gaze and its influence on representation. “The Origin of Men reminds us where we all come from - even those who remain entrenched in misogyny.”
“I am interested in women for what they contribute to society, whether through their intellectual pursuits or their creative power.”

Books
[edit]
SIFNOS FACES - Τα Πρόσωπα της Σίφνου[18][19]
ISBN 9782957366705 Ari Rossner captures the essence of the people of Sifnos, a Greek island, through intimate portraiture. Over two years, he photographed 70 islanders, portraying their daily lives and traditions. Each portrait is accompanied by a short text in Greek, French, and English, contextualizing the person.
"A photo stops time and time is the most beautiful thing we can give." With these few words, photographer Ari Rossner tells the story of the birth of his book "Sifnos Faces" which he dedicates to the islanders who captivated him.
From the farmer preserving the gestures of his ancestors to the taxi driver and the pope—the central figure of the Greek Orthodox community, the characters in the book serve as a record of life as it is today, before modernity reshapes even the traditions of the islands.

THE INDIANS(upcoming, 2025) Ari Rossner's longest project - a 450-page book documenting people from across India, photographed over two decades.
Portraying the people from every corner of the country through a lens of positivity, humanity, and spontaneous humor. Unscripted interactions and everyday playfulness reveal India’s unique ability to find warmth and joy even in the simplest moments. The approach to portraiture are direct and intimate. The images are taken from close range, with the subject looking directly into the camera, as if engaging with the viewer in a personal encounter.
Contemporary dance photography
[edit]
Ari Rossner's exploration of contemporary dance photography stemmed from his admiration for the grace, creativity, and emotional expression embodied by some of the most visionary choreographers. Drawn to the fluidity and intensity of movement, he photographed performances and rehearsals of dance companies, including Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal, Batsheva Dance Company, and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal.
