Gestational Surrogacy
Gestation Surrogacy is a way of assisted reproduction technique (ART). According to the New York State Department of Health, gestational surrogacy is way where those who often can't carry their own children, whether it is becasue of medical conditions, same-sex couples, and single individuals to have their own child.[2] A woman will carry and deliver the child for another person or couple, known as a gestational surrogate (GS). The couple or person she is carrying for is known as intended parents (IP). Before this prcoess, embyros are created with the intended parents egg and sperm through the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF), or with the egg or sperm of the selected donor. Therefore, the baby is not genetically related to the surrogate. Once the embryos are created (and often tested), they are then transferred into the surrogate's uterus. [3]
In comparison, traditional surrogacy, what many know surrogacy as, is the process where the woman carrying the baby's own eggs are used. Therefore, the baby will be biologically related to the surrogate. However, gestational surrogacy is now more commonly practiced as it is more ethical and less legally complex.[4]
