Ananth Subramaniam (Tamil: ஆனந்த் சுப்பிரமணியம், born 25 September 1992) is a Malaysian filmmaker of Tamil descent. He is best known for his short film Bleat![1] (2025), which premiere at the Critics Week section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival[2], where it won the Queer Palm[3][4] for Best Short Film. It is the first short film from Malaysia that was shown at Cannes Film Festival.[5]
Ananth’s work often explores themes of ancestral identity and family, layered within genre-driven storytelling[6]. He is currently developing his debut feature film with support from Berlinale's Talents Tokyo, SGIFF's Asian Producers Network, Full Circle Lab and other international platforms.

Early Life
[edit]Ananth Subramaniam was born in a family where stories were a constant presence, whether told at the dinner table or watched on late-night television. While he was drawn to filmmaking from a young age, he chose to pursue architecture during his undergraduate studies. After completing his degree, he shifted focus and earned a scholarship to Kingston University London, where he pursued a Master’s in Filmmaking[7].
Career
[edit]His earlier works include The House of Brick and Stone (2022), which premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, and Liar Land (2020)[8], which received a Special Mention at the Locarno Film Festival. Colourless (2018)[9] marked his breakthrough in the Malaysian short film scene, winning the Grand Prize and Best Director at the BMW Shorties, along with several other awards.
