AJ Rappold (born August 30, 1984) is an American former professional ice hockey player and proprietary trader. A highly touted forward in his junior years, Rappold played for the United States National Development Program and the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League (WHL), before signing an entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings. Following his professional hockey career, he transitioned into finance, working as a proprietary trader on Wall Street. https://www.hockeydb.com/
Early life and junior career
[edit]Rappold was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He joined the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he developed as one of the top prospects in his class.[1]
He was selected third overall in the 1999 WHL Bantam Draft by the Regina Pats. From 1999 to 2003, Rappold played four seasons with the Pats, appearing in 325 games, scoring 150 goals and 175 assists, while accumulating 285 penalty minutes and a +47 plus-minus rating. https://www.hockeydb.com/ In his third season, he finished third in WHL MVP voting.
Professional career
[edit]During his 18-year-old season, Rappold suffered a significant knee injury—tearing his ACL, MCL, and dislocating his knee—which severely impacted his NHL Draft stock. Despite the injury, the Detroit Red Wings signed Rappold to a three-year entry-level contract following that season.[2]
From 2003 to 2006, he played professionally with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Red Wings. He then signed with AK Bars Kazan of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), where he played for two seasons before retiring from professional hockey.
Post-hockey career
[edit]After retiring from the sport, Rappold pursued both undergraduate and graduate degrees before launching a new career in finance. He joined Goldman Sachs as a proprietary trader, specializing in complex strategies across equity and derivatives markets.[3]
