The 607th Combat Communications Squadron (CBCS) was a specialized battlefield communications unit of the United States Air Force. Operating as a geographically separated unit (GSU), and subordinate to the 607th Air Support Operations Group, 7th Air Force (7AF) at Osan Air Base.
When deployed, the 607th would constitute the battlefield communications backbone for the entire Korean Peninsula stretching to predetermined locations throughout South Korea supporting the 8th Fighter Wing (8FW) at Kunsan, the 51st Fighter Wing (51 FW) at Osan, various elements of the Eighth US Army (EUSA) and 2d Infantry Division as well as other follow-on units to take the fight north in defense of the Korean Peninsula.
The squadron was a self-sustaining unit with two mission set elements: A (SATCOM) and B (Wideband), a vehicle maintenance facility, power production facility and a locally based mobility training (Mob School) which instructed personnel in base defense procedures specific to Korea.
The unit participated in DoD, USAF, and PACAF base defense exercise and was responsible for post defense for their portion of the fence-line until Camp Humphreys was expanded in the 2000s.
Due to cost-cutting measures and a repositioning of units in PACAF's Area of responsibility, the 607th was inactivated and reconstituted into a regional unit based at Andersen Air Force Base,Guam as the 644th Combat Communications Squadron.
