1 Thousand Silent Steps is an upcoming anime television series created by McKenzie Hammonds and produced by Kumori Animation Studio, an independent animation company based in the United States. The series is planned to premiere on YouTube in 2030, with a total of 12 episodes.
The story follows a socially anxious middle school boy who sets a personal challenge to make 1,000 friends during his years at an elite Japanese high school, Sakura Elite Private Institution. He is one of four scholarship students accepted into the school, which is known for admitting the children of wealthy and influential families. After his mother is diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, her final wish is for him to graduate from Sakura Elite, setting the emotional foundation for the series.
Despite facing ridicule and isolation from many of his peers, the boy remains committed to honoring his mother’s wish while chasing his own goal of personal growth. The anime explores themes of class division, anxiety, emotional resilience, and the complexity of high school relationships. A central dynamic involves the main character and the school’s “queen bee,” a popular and outwardly mean girl who shows a surprising and possessive affection toward him in private.
Each episode introduces a new character who slowly becomes part of the boy’s journey, adding emotional depth and expanding the show’s world. The anime’s unique blend of slice-of-life drama and emotional storytelling aims to resonate with audiences navigating loneliness, identity, and self-worth.
